Jo Mullein is the newest Green Lantern in the DC Universe, and now she is set to hunt down the villains who have laid waste to the Green Lantern Corps. In Green Lantern #3, the Corps is left reeling after an attack that left Oa in ruins and the Central Battery destroyed, and Jo Mullein is going to bring them to justice. The issue, written by Geoffrey Thorne, with art by Tom Raney and Marco Santucci, colors by Michael Atiyeh and letters by Rob Leigh, is on sale now in print and digital.
Sojourner “Jo” Mullein first appeared in the maxi-series Green Lantern: Far Sector, the creation of acclaimed novelist N.K. Jemisin and artist Jamal Campbell. A former police officer, Mullein was recruited to the Green Lantern Corps and dispatched to a distant corner of the universe; she was given a year to make a difference in that sector. During that year, she did not interact with the rest of the DC Universe, but now that her tour of duty is over, she has returned to Sector 2814—just missing a horrendous attack on the Guardians and the Green Lantern Corps.
Due to being assigned to a sector so far away, it took Mullein a while to get to Oa. Seeing the carnage, Jo immediately takes charge of the situation, opening a line of communication with any Lantern who can hear, telling them to hang tight and do what they needed to do to survive, and help will come for them. Addressing councilors from the United Planets, Jo informs them that whoever did this is probably watching Oa and, due to her year-long absence, did not account for her. She opens another line to the surviving Lanterns, informing them whoever attacked the Corps will be coming for her, and she intends to fight them; however, if she fails, then the rest of the Corps must rally together. It is revealed that none other than Hal Jordan is listening to her message.
Jo Mullein is the newest member of the Green Lantern Corps, and this issue demonstrates why the Guardians were justified in recruiting her. She walked into a nightmarish scenario and was able to overcome her fear to take charge of the situation. She offered comfort to the frightened Green Lanterns and made subtle threats to those who attacked Oa. Jo Mullein was shown to be Earth’s Green Lantern in Future State—will this be the event that leads her down that path? Will she truly be able to save the Corps?
