After one of his most incredible years as The Green Lantern, Hal Jordan has been restored along with the rest of the Green Lantern Corps in DC's Universe. But any fan who assumed that meant a return to normal was sadly mistaken. Not only is Hal Jordan's army about to lose its commanders, but his power ring is about to get some brand new abilities in The Green Lantern: Season Two.

While fans didn't know exactly what to expect from Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp's The Green Lantern, it became clear almost instantly that no expectations could encapsulate the scope of their story. Spanning across space and bringing Hal up against the forces of the Blackstars, the first season of the series ended in a shocking twist with The Green Lantern #12. Not only did Hal Jordan lose, wishing the Lanterns out of the DC Universe completely... but trading his loyalty to become a Blackstar himself. Thankfully, he managed to win (back) the day in the Green Lantern: Blackstars miniseries, returning the Guardians of the Universe and their Lanterns to reality. And in the first official preview of the coming issue, Hal is getting more than a medal for his trouble.

The preview pages show that things are only going to get stranger as the story heads forward, with Hal Jordan awarded a "new, upgraded power battery." It would be a fool's errand to try to imagine what Morrison and Sharp will have cooked up for such a device, but that isn't the twist most readers will be talking about. Not yet, anyway. That honor goes to the Guardians of the Universe who welcome Hal back... only to reveal it is now time for them to leave Oa and the corps forever. Morrison explained to EW that the disappearance of the Guardians, and the selection of their replacements, will be a major plot point for the issue that follows (offering plenty of opportunuties for Hal Jordan to demonstrate his 'new abilities'):

The first issue is about Hal Jordan going in search of replacements for the Guardians of the Universe. It ties into all the big stuff that’s happening in the DC Universe next year, so there’s a little bit of that but the fun was ‘let’s mess up the status quo.’ It’s a little bit like PC Principal from South Park, where suddenly everything’s changed at the top. These are new Guardians with very different ideas of what’s right and wrong. Instead of Hal butting heads with these geriatric space dudes that he always had problems with, where he was the young cocky guy and they were the old heads, suddenly we have Young Guardians. It’s also having a little bit of fun with this ‘ok boomer’ thing.
