A24's The Green Knight will play online as a virtual screening for one night only. The film was set to premiere at the South by Southwest Film Festival on March 16, 2020, as well as a release in theaters on May 29, 2020. However, due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic, the film festival and theaters were forced to close. The film ultimately hit theaters on July 30, 2021, but overseas in the United Kingdom, there is still no release date set, given the state of the pandemic.

The Green Knight, also screen-titled Sir Gawain and the Green Knight by Anonymous, is written and directed by David Lowery (A Ghost Story). The story is based on the poem titled Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, which is from the 14th century. When Sir Gawain (Dev Patel) confronts the imposing Green Knight, his fate is locked onto a path where he has gained fame and all that comes with it. However, he must follow the rules of the game that have been established, which could result in his premature death. The cast also includes the likes of Alicia Vikander, Joel Edgerton, Barry Keoghan, and Ralph Ineson.

The Green Knight In The Green Knight

The Green Knight has received a generally positive reception from critics through review aggregator websites. On a reported budget of $15 million, The Green Knight ended up taking home around $6.8 million in its opening weekend against Jungle Cruise. As expected, it performed best in major markets, such as Los Angeles and New York. The Green Knight's opening weekend over-performed against expectations, making it an overall success. Since the movie's initial announcement, the title has been highly anticipated, so it's great to see the movie performing well now that it has finally hit theaters.

Given the high amount of demand for The Green Knight, it's smart of A24 to take advantage of this movie's release the best that they can. While the film is already out in theaters in the United States, not all audiences feel comfortable sitting in a public movie theater with strangers during the COVID-19 pandemic. While the price is more expensive than the typical movie ticket, it does provide the opportunity for viewers to watch comfortably from home along with those they live with. It's similar to the added Premier cost that's an extra $30 to watch a Disney movie on Disney+ the same day that it hits theaters.
