Will there be a sequel to The Green Knight? Here's everything we know about a potential Green Knight 2. Based on the Arthurian legend of Sir Gawain, The Green Knight is a loose adaptation of the 14th-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight." David Lowery wrote and directed the A24 movie, which delivered on its promise of being a story unlike the Arthurian legends audiences are more familiar with.

The Green Knight follows Dev Patel as Sir Gawain, the nephew of King Arthur, after accepting a challenge from the mysterious Green Knight on Christmas day. Gawain agrees to play a game with the Green Knight where he strikes one blow with the Green Knight's ax, but the powerful being can return the same blow to Gawain exactly one year later. The majority of The Green Knight takes place a year after Gawain beheaded the Green Knight, only to watch the knight live and leave Camelot to wait for the rematch. Gawain travels across the country to find the Green Chapel and faces different challenges that test his courage.

The arthouse approach to a potentially epic story, Lowery's direction, and Patel's stellar performance led to The Green Knight receiving rave reviews upon its release in July 2021. It has been heralded as one of the best films of the year, but its ending is rather ambiguous, especially when comparing it to the original poem. The incredible reception and surprising box office performance of The Green Knight might leave many wondering if Sir Gawain's story will continue with a sequel.

Will The Green Knight 2 Happen?

A24 has yet to announce plans for a sequel to The Green Knight. The acclaimed independent movie studio has only been around since 2012, but they have yet to make a franchise film. It still has a long way to go to be among A24's biggest hits, despite The Green Knight overperforming at the box office based on expectations. If the money continues to roll in for the film, though, then that could incentivize the studio and Lowery to discuss the possibility of The Green Knight 2.

The Green Knight 2 Release Date

Since The Green Knight 2 is not yet announced, it does not have a release date either. Before COVID-19 delays, the turnaround time for The Green Knight was going to be roughly two years from its announcement to its release. It is difficult to imagine a sequel happening without David Lowery returning. His next film, a live-action reimagining of Peter Pan & Wendy for Disney, releases in 2022. If a Green Knight sequel is chosen as his next project, that likely means it wouldn't be released until sometime in 2024.

The Green Knight Ending explained

If The Green Knight 2 does happen, it would be expected that Dev Patel will return to star as Sir Gawain. The rest of the cast could depend on the story and what Lowery does after the ambiguous ending of The Green Knight. A direct continuation of the story in some fashion could allow Ralph Ineson to return as the Green Knight. Other candidates to return would include Alicia Vikander as Essel, Sarita Choudhury as Gawain's mother, Sean Harris as King Arthur, and Kate Dickie as the queen.

While The Green Knight is loosely based on the 14-century poem "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," The Green Knight 2 could adapt one of the other Arthurian stories featuring Gawain. One such possibility is an adaption of "The Wedding of Sir Gawain and Dame Ragnelle." Lowery could also decide to continue reinventing Gawain's story and tell a completely original tale following the knight's adventures if he survived his second encounter with the Green Knight.
