Love it or hate it, Eli Roth's 2005 horror film Hostel proved that the director's gore-filled brand of scares had a built-in audience. However, jump to 2015, and years have gone by since a Roth helmed big-screen scarefest made it to the big screen, state-side. Roth's upcoming Keanu Reeves thriller Knock Knock should finally break that streak, though the film has yet to receive an official U.S. release date.
There's also the matter of Roth's cannibal movie The Green Inferno. The film made its debut in the festival circuit back in 2013, but now fans eager to check it out know when they will get their chance.
Roth himself took to Facebook (see above) to reveal that The Green Inferno has been picked up for distribution by Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions for a theatrical release on September 25, 2015. The company seems like a perfect fit for Roth's film. It's released indie drama/thrillers like Whiplash and Lawless in the past; more famously, though, it's the production force behind lucrative horror franchises Paranormal Activity, Insidious, The Purge and Sinister.
Green Inferno was one of our most anticipated horror releases of 2014, before the film was indefinitely shelved by financier Worldview Entertainment. However, since it reportedly only cost $6 million, it shouldn't have a tough time overcoming its graphic violence and lack of star power to turn a profit when it does at last arrive in theaters (especially given Roth's name recognition among horror fanatics).
Green Info is likely a project slipped off many people's radars (even given Roth's involvement), but to be sure, the film would be hard-pressed to find a better partner than Blumhouse Productions. Moviegoers who have no interest in Roth's in-your-face style of horror filmmaking will probably still pass up this flick. However, those of you who have repeatedly watched its full trailer with raised eyebrows - it's time to get excited.
