Developer Spiders has confirmed that fans who own GreedFall via PlayStation Plus will not be able to access the free current-gen update on PlayStation 5. GreedFall entered the PS Plus lineup in January 2021, alongside other heavy-hitters such as Maneater and Shadow of the Tomb Raider.

Spiders unveiled plans for a free PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S upgrade back in November, promising performance enhancements, graphical improvements, and new content. The studio offered concrete details regarding all of the above a few days ago, outlining an update that includes up to 4K resolution, "highly improved visuals," a 60fps Performance Mode, and much faster loading times. Meanwhile, the fresh content will come in the form of The De Vespe Conspiracy, a story expansion set in an unexplored area of GreedFall's Teer Fradee territory. Most notably, players can expect The De Vespe Conspiracy to revolve around a "nefarious conspiracy" the threatens the world's balance of power.

Following the June 30 release date announcement for GreedFall's current-gen update, PS Plus subscribers were, naturally, curious as to whether they could access the PS5 upgrade. The official GreedFall Twitter account (via Push Square) told one inquiring user that PS Plus' iteration of the RPG will not be "eligible for the free upgrade to the PS5 version." This is especially interesting since the account confirmed elsewhere that Xbox Game Pass' GreedFall version will support the upgrade path.

Why one service grants members access to the upgrade path while another doesn't remains a mystery at present. However, PlayStation platforms aren't strangers to this kind of occurrence. Some may recall that when Final Fantasy VII Remake hit PS Plus in March, Sony made it clear the PS5 upgrade would not apply to that particular version. Similarly, Marvel's Avengers on PS Now couldn't take advantage of the game's PS5 boosts. These various examples suggest the issue may lie with Sony and not third-party game publishers.

Good news should be on the horizon for PS Plus subscribers, though. Over the next couple of days, PlayStation will likely unveil the July 2021 PlayStation Plus lineup; rumor has it that titles such as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, A Plague Tale: Innocence, and WRC 9 may headline the selection.
