The main character in the new manga Greatest Clan works in a similar profession that's as equally celebrated and renowned as hunting in Hunter X Hunter, except he's essentially the evil counterpart of Hunter X Hunter's protagonist, Gon Freecss.

Greatest Clan's Noel lives in a world where people can become seekers, individuals that, as the name implies, seek things for a living. What they seek can range from treasures and ruins to beasts and criminals. This is a lot like the hunters from the incredibly popular anime Hunter X Hunter who can hunt essentially anything on the planet. The difference is hunters are also tasked with and endeavor to protect knowledge, people and nature. Both trades are equally sought after and those who become either a seeker or hunter are considered elite members of society.

Both series star a character whose main inspiration is either their father (Gon) or grandfather (Noel) and will do just about anything to be the greatest in their occupation. What truly separates Greatest Clan's Noel from Hunter X Hunter's Gon is that Noel will actually do anything. These include both morally questionable and downright evil acts. At best, Gon's determination will compel him to continually fight even when he's clearly the weaker fighter. But he will never use this as an excuse to betray or hurt his friends, as he endeavors to protect those close to him. More importantly, he is incredibly forgiving, even to a fault.

Meanwhile, Noel from the Greatest Clan manga has proven that if anyone betrays or gets in the way of him achieving his dream, he will hunt them down and do what's necessary to right their wrongs. Noel first reveals his true self when two members of his seeker party steal all of their group's hard-earned funds, which they were going to use to establish themselves as a clan that would have boosted their chances of becoming better seekers. Noel, conniving as always, finds the thieves and then proceeds to beat them mercilessly. He even goes so far as to cast a spell that is usually illegal, except when it's used against a criminal.

It's hard to imagine Hunter X Hunter's Gon Freecss ever doing anything so horrendous as all that, and rightly so, since it would totally go against his character. Gon might have a temper and succumb to impulsive urges that get him into trouble on a perpetual basis in the manga, but he's too kindhearted. In defense of Greatest Clan's Noel, he did grow up looking up to and training with his grandfather before watching him die a violent death. As such, everything his grandfather taught him, from never letting anyone look down on him to becoming the strongest, was ingrained so deeply in his psyche that theideas eventually became twisted. Conversely, Gon Freecss' inspiration was born more so out of hope and curiosity, to learn why his father wanted to become a hunter and then, later, to find him.
