Adapting video games into films is a tricky business. Over the last few decades, there have been many attempts, with the genre becoming infamous for their poor quality. But the opposite can also be said to be true, with many films being adapted into video games. And unfortunately, they too often prove to be pretty bad.

But this isn't always the case, with some movie adaptation and video game adaptations catching audiences off guard with just how surprisingly good they are. With this in mind here are ten video games that made great movies, and ten movies that made great video games.

Movie: Warcraft

Despite receiving bashing from critics, the 2016 fantasy epic Warcraft was much more warmly embraced by fans of the video games series it is based on. Using some pretty epic motion capture technology to bring the Orcs and various other races to life in stunning detail.

The film was praised for being a faithful adaptation of the games of the same name and for making every character three-dimensional, even the Orcs who are typically portrayed as evil one-note monsters.

Game: King Kong

2005 was an era rife with awful video game adaptations, with seemingly every big movie getting a half-hearted game made on the cheap for no one in particular.  The King Kong game surprised everyone, with its dark and atmospheric island to explore filled with terrifying monsters to fight.

The game allowed you to play as both Jack Driscoll and as Kong himself, alternating between characters the game rarely became repetitive and followed the events of the hit film closely.

Movie: Rampage

Based on the '80s arcade game of the same name, Rampage isn't exactly the first thing that spring to mind when considering games to adapt into a movie. The game features almost no plot, with simply a giant monster going around the city smashing as much as he can.

The film is similar in that respect and certainly won't win any awards for writing. But if you're down for a fun action movie that doesn't take itself too seriously you'll have a good time with Rampage.

Game: Scott Pilgrim

Scott Pilgrim vs the World Video Game

Based on the movie of the same name, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World: The Game, features the same crazy fights and unique humor you would expect with an adaptation. The game was well-received and is considered one of the best modern beat-em-ups, the soundtrack too received praise was is held in high regard.

The bad news is the game is no longer available for download on PS3 or Xbox 360, due to licensing issues the game has been de-listed.

Movie: Angry Birds

Based on the mobile game that went on to become a worldwide phenomenon, The Angry Birds Movie takes the cute and cuddly mobile game and fleshes it out with a story and characters.

With the simple premise of birds that launch themselves at pigs and their complex structures, the movie had a difficult task of constructing a story. But it succeeded and the cute animated film provides slapstick humor the whole family can enjoy.

Game: Ghostbuster

Ghostbuster: The Video Game is essentially Ghostbusters 3, with many of the cast reprising their roles as their iconic characters from the beloved series, including Bill Murray.

The game was praised for its humor and faithfulness to the film, with players able to step into the shoes of a Ghostbuster, equipped with a Proton pack and takedown ghosts. The game was described as "a love letter to fans of the franchise" and with its portrayal of iconic ghosts and characters, it not hard to see why.

Movie: Sonic

Despite Sonic initially disgusting and terrifying everyone with his nightmarish appearance he since then went through a redesign and the film is all the better for it. The fun family film has a long to like, with sonic looking exactly how he does in the games.

Top that all of that with Jim Carrey turning in an unexpected peak '90s Jim Carrey performance as Dr. Robotnik, giving us a Robotik who different from the video game version but still a whole lot of fun.

Game: Goldeneye

Not much needs to be said about the classic '90s video game GoldenEye 007, as it has gone down in history as one of the greatest and most innovative shooters ever made.

Based on the Bond film of the same name GoldenEye featured split-screen play and a host of iconic Bond baddies to play as and against. The game also received a modern remake in 2010, allowing the game to be played on newer systems.

Movie: Pokémon Detective Pikachu

Pokémon Detective Pikachu is by no means the first Pokémon movie, with the franchise spawning many animated features over the last couple of decades. But Detective Pikachu is the only film in the franchise that garnered good reviews and attracted positive attention.

The film was praised for bringing the unique world of Pokémon to live-action. Ryan Reynold too was praised for his vocal performance as the cute and cuddly Pikachu.

Game: X-Men Origins: Wolverine

Quite possibly the worst X-Men movie proved to be the greatest inspiration for a video game. 2009's X-men Origins: Wolverine video game was one of the year's biggest surprises. The game surpassed what little expectations were held for it and the movie tie-in outshines the very movie it was based upon.

The combat was praised for being fluid and satisfying, and while the game is by no means perfect it's a fun and exhilarating action-adventure that delves deep into Wolverine's origin.
