Ryan Reynolds reacts to being mistaken for Ryan Gosling in the latter's new The Gray Man images. The upcoming action thriller movie is directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, the duo behind some of Marvel Studios' biggest hits, and is adapted from Mark Greaney's 2009 novel of the same name. After a limited theatrical release beginning July 15, The Gray Man is scheduled to hit Netflix on July 22.
One of Netflix's most anticipated 2022 movies and, at $200 million, the most expensive ever made by the streamer, The Gray Man stars Gosling as Court Gentry, a skilled CIA mercenary who uncovers dark agency secrets. When former colleague Lloyd Hansen, played by Chris Evans, puts a bounty on Gentry's head, he finds himself the subject of a global manhunt, resulting in some violent confrontations with international assassins. Flanking the two stars in the supporting cast are Ana de Armas, Regé-Jean Page, Jessica Henwick, Billy Bob Thornton, and Alfre Woodard, among others.
While a batch of The Gray Man images had audiences excited to see Gosling on screen again, one outlet, to Reynolds' amusement, got the two Ryans confused. In their tweet about the photos, News18.com credited Reynolds as Evans' co-star, and the actor responded to the mix-up with a tweet of his own. Rather than correct the error, however, he simply accepts that he's now part of The Gray Man cast, and notes that he's been having a particularly strong 2022. Check out Reynolds' tweet below:
While he can't count The Gray Man among his releases, Reynolds is having a strong year, currently riding high off the positive reception of his own Netflix movie, The Adam Project. He is also set to play Ebeneezer Scrooge across from Will Ferrell in Spirited, an Apple TV+ movie expected to release on the platform sometime in 2022. Neither of these projects see him share the screen with Evans, though the two did end up on the same cast list in 2021, when the Captain America actor made a brief cameo in Reynolds' Free Guy.
While it is amusing that a news outlet mistook one Canadian actor named Ryan for another, it perhaps illustrates just how long it's been since Gosling took on a starring role - The Gray Man marks his first feature film appearance since 2018. Similarly, besides a couple of cameos, Evans will be playing his first major part since 2019, and seeing both of these beloved actors returning is a key reason why anticipation for the Russo brothers project is so high. Hopefully, their collaboration delivers on what fans of both stars are hoping for - and maybe Netflix can find room for Reynolds somewhere in the sequel.
