As The Flash season 9 gets ready to end this month, Grant Gustin gives an encouraging response about potentially reprising the role of Barry Allen in the future. The CW is preparing to bid farewell to its longest-running Arrowverse show as The Flash has only three episodes left. The series finale, which airs on May 24, will bring an end to the Earth-Prime side of the Arrowverse. By the time The Flash season 9 concludes, Gustin will have played the fastest man alive for a decade after making his debut in Arrow season 2.

However, it may not be the last time Gustin suits up as the Scarlet Speedster once The Flash season 9 is over. In an interview with Us Magazine, Gustin was asked if he would ever consider returning to the DC world as The Flash. For the time being, he isn't thinking too much about it, but Gustin would, of course, be open to hearing pitches if he got any calls about it. For the Arrowverse star, The Flash is a role that is "very, very close to my heart," as he shared the following:

I can’t wrap my head around it right now, obviously. But if someone called me today or tomorrow and was like, ‘Hey, we have this amazing Flash idea,’ obviously it’s like, I’m gonna take that phone call and listen to that idea. And I think this is a character that I’m going to — no matter if I play it again [or not] — I’ll probably be associated with this character more than anything else in my career, for the rest of my life. So I’ll always listen to any Flash pitch. [I haven't] received any of those phone calls [but I would] for sure be open [to playing the character again.] I mean, it’s very, very close to my heart. I think it always will be.

How Grant Gustin Could Return As The Flash In The Future

Grant Gustin as The Flash

Even though Ezra Miller is starring as Barry Allen in the DCEU, The Flash movie will reset the franchise in preparation for the new DC Universe, which leaves the speedster's cinematic future up in the air. Whether they focus on a new actor as Barry or introduce someone like Wally West, there are still other ways for Gustin to reprise his role outside the DC Universe. At this point, the Arrowverse is regarded as one of the Elseworlds properties in the eyes of DC Studios, which makes a return for Gustin a little easier because any future stories for him wouldn't conflict with the DC Universe.

Depending on the platform, a special The Flash revival for Gustin could always happen, either as a movie or an HBO Max limited series event. However, if James Gunn were to tap into the multiverse for his DC Studios projects, that would be one way for Gustin to take part in the upcoming shared films and TV shows. The idea of Gustin's Flash crossing paths with whoever is the Scarlet Speedster in Gunn's universe would be a great way to celebrate the Arrowverse hero's legacy.

Needless to say, Gustin's time as The Flash will always remain one of the biggest chapters in superhero media, from his show's massive success to the actor becoming synonymous with the DC icon. That is why it's very bittersweet for The Flash to come to an end this year, especially as the Arrowverse is on its last legs. Hopefully, as The Flash series finale arrives in a few weeks, it won't be the last time fans get to see Gustin as the fastest man alive.
