Thor: Ragnarok's Grandmaster will team-up with his brother the Collector in a future film, if Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has his way. This past weekend, Ragnarok thundered past $100 million at the box office thanks to its early international opening. That number will climb substantially once the film releases domestically and in China this week, likely leading to the biggest film in the Thor franchise yet. Even better, the movie has been lauded by critics and fans alike. While much of that is due to the visuals and direction of Taika Waititi, it's hard to deny the electric power of the film's cast.
Ragnarok not only brings back Chris Hemsworth and Tom Hiddleston (and wisely pulls in Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner/Hulk), it also introduces a strong crop of newcomers. Tessa Thompson as Valkyrie and Cate Blanchett as Hela have been been receiving tons of praise, but few can look past the impeccable casting of Jeff Goldblum as the eccentric Grandmaster. Not only does the character allow for a perfect pairing of Waititi's and Goldblum's sensibilities, but it offers the hope of the Grandmaster eventually playing off of Benecio del Toro's Collector from Guardians of the Galaxy.
Fandango spoke with Feige about Thor: Ragnarok and talk quickly turned to The Collector and the Grandmaster (who, for those not familiar, are brothers). For Feige, he would absolutely love for Goldblum and del Toro to pair off in a future film as their idiosyncratic characters:
"It would be awesome man. It would be great. We love the idea that they're brothers. If you go on the Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout attraction at California Adventure in Anaheim, you will see a picture on Collector's wall of he and the Grandmaster playing some sort of a space chess game, which right now is the only place you can see the two of them in a frame together, but let's hope that changes someday."
Here's the full Guardians of the Galaxy: Mission Breakout painting I did. It's on the wall in the lobby before you go off into the first little rooms. It was fun to create the scenario between the two and have so much of the story be told through their faces and expressions. I really enjoy painting faces and expressions. Benicio is great as The Collector and I can't wait to see @jeffgoldblum as the Grandmaster! #guardiansofthegalaxy #gotgvol2 #gotgmissionbreakout #beniciodeltoro #jeffgoldblum #thecollector #grandmaster #thorragnarok #marvelstudios #marvelcinematicuniverse #digitalart #disneyland #californiaadventure
In the comics, the Grandmaster and the Collector are siblings and both Elders of the Universe. With age and power beyond most beings, the two spend their time galavanting across the universe and indulging in their namesake hobbies. Often, this causes them to run afoul of various heroes, given the duo's propensity for kidnapping individuals to add to their games and collections, respectively.
Arguably, del Toro's Collector was one of the standout parts in Guardians of the Galaxy (which is saying something), and fans have been hoping for his return ever since. The promise of him sparring with Goldblum's Grandmaster, however, would certainly be a peak Marvel moment. For now, fans will have to enjoy artist Ryan Meinerding's art of the two together (see the image above). Still, given how important the MCU cosmos will be to the franchise in the future, it seems fair to assume that we haven't seen the last of either The Grandmaster or The Collector yet.
