With Grand Theft Auto 6 firmly on the horizon and in development, fans have been speculating about the future of GTA Online in the next title - a mode that should take some inspiration from 2008's Grand Theft Auto IV. The popular title, which a leak has suggested had a remaster canceled, is set in Liberty City (a reimagining of New York City) and marked the step into the next generation for Rockstar - aptly called the HD universe - bringing with it a simple, yet charming online mode. Alongside races, free roam, and deathmatches, the game mode to stand out the most and one that should be reintroduced in future titles is Cops 'n' Crooks.

Cops 'n' Crooks, which can feature between four and 16 players who are subsequently split into two different teams, usually equally - police officers and the criminals (who are seemingly based on the Mafia). The general premise of the mode is the cops are attempting to stop and take out the crooks before they are able to make a getaway, whether that's in a car, boat, or helicopter. Within the mode, which could return if the sensible GTA 4 remaster rumors are true, there are two separate variations of Cops 'n' Crooks that can be played - All for One and One for All.

In the All for One version, the crooks must help their boss escape to the getaway vehicle - with the boss being controlled by one of the players and bearing a striking resemblance to one of Niko Bellic's enemies - Jimmy Pegorino. The cops, on the other hand, have the choice to either eliminate the boss or destroy the getaway vehicle. Should the boss ride in the getaway vehicle for about eight to ten seconds - the crooks win. One for All follows a similar premise, however, the crooks will be without a boss this time, and simply need to fill either a boat or a helicopter with four players and remain seated for the same time as in All for One - with the online GTA cops wanting to eliminate all of the crooks to win.

Why Has Cops 'n' Crooks Not Appeared In Grand Theft Auto 5?

A leaked screenshot appeared online in 2020 teasing an update for GTA: Online that would bring Cops 'n' Crooks to the modern generation of consoles in June of that year, as reported by Gfinity. However, for reasons still unknown this did not come to fruition. Whether the reasoning was that the leaks were entirely fake or real-life controversies surrounding the police at the time led to Rockstar's decision to cancel the update, it left fans understandably disappointed. Whether Cops 'n' Crooks will see the light of day on GTA V is yet to be seen, but considering the current development of the next game in the series, it would be assumed that will take priority.

With Grand Theft Auto 6, possibly releasing in 2024, Rockstar will strive to create the biggest, most varied, and most enjoyable sandbox yet. With the simple nature of the Cops 'n' Crooks game mode, a transition to the modern generation should not be difficult to achieve. Combined with a larger player base, more getaway vehicles to choose from, and a variety of landscapes to chase across - reintroducing Cops 'n' Crooks to GTA 6's online component should be a top priority.
