A new report has revealed information about the setting and protagonist of Grand Theft Auto VI. Rockstar Games confirmed that GTA 6 is in development back in February, though the release date and platforms for the game have yet to be revealed.

There have been many rumors circulating regarding GTA 6 over the past few years, to the point where the water has been muddied by so many likely fakes. One persistent rumor is that GTA 6 will have a female protagonist in its story mode. GTA Online for GTA 5 lets the player create a female character, but there has yet to be a leading lady in the Grand Theft Auto series, in both the mainline entries and the spin-offs. The rumors regarding the new setting in GTA 6 have also been all over the place, though a persistent rumor has mentioned a return to Vice City.

Details about GTA 6 have now emerged online, as part of a new report by Jason Schreier of Bloomberg that details the dismantling of the frat boy culture that used to be present in Rockstar Games. According to the report, GTA 6 will be set in Miami, which strongly suggests that Vice City will be part of the game, even if it's just part of the map. There will be two protagonists in GTA 6, who are a pair of bank robbers inspired by Bonnie and Clyde. One of these protagonists is said to be a Latina, who will be the first playable female protagonist in GTA history.

According to Schreier's report, the plan for GTA 6 was to have a vast map that dwarfed the landscapes of the previous games, which would be impressive, considering the size of the map in GTA 5. These plans were downsized, however, and the game now has an area that is meant to convey a fictional version of Miami and its surrounding areas. The intention is for Rockstar Games to add to the map over time, with new missions and cities being implemented via updates. The incredible financial success of GTA Online (which continues to make major money for Rockstar) may have prompted this decision, as the game still has a thriving online community to this day, and GTA 6 has the chance to build a world that is even more impressive.

It's unclear when exactly fans will get the chance to experience GTA 6 (the report mentions previous analyst speculation that it could release in Take-Two's 2024 financial year), as development is reported to be progressing slowly, especially as it was impacted by the pandemic. GTA Online continues to be a money spinner, so there is no rush to get the game out of the door. The initial report sounds like Grand Theft Auto VI is going to be the biggest and most impressive entry in the series to date, and if the reports about Rockstar Games killing its crunch culture are true, then the developers should be able to take all the time they need to finish the game without it impacting their health or personal life.
