Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are teaming up to make a movie based on the Gran Turismo video game, with Neill Blomkamp likely to direct. Gran Turismo is a car racing video game known for its immersive gameplay. There had previously been rumors of a Gran Turismo TV show in the works, but those rumors are likely unfounded. Sony has produced movies based on video games before, including 2022’s Uncharted, starring Tom Holland and directed by Ruben Fleishcer. Uncharted was a huge success for Sony, racking in $400 million in worldwide box office revenue.

Now, Deadline reports that Sony and Playstation are developing a Gran Turismo movie. No plot details about the movie have been revealed. Since Uncharted was such an overwhelming box office success, it makes sense that Sony is banking on the fact that another video game movie will perform well for them. While he hasn’t officially signed on to the project, Sony is in talks with Blomkamp about directing the Gran Turismo movie. Blomkamp is perhaps best known for directing District 9, Elysium, Chappie, and his latest work, the supernatural horror film Demonic. Blomkamp is very familiar with video games, as he's creating his very own game called Off the Grid right now, set to be released next year.

It will be interesting to see how a film adaptation will be derived from the Gran Turismo game, as it’s much more focused on the driving experience than being character or story-driven. Sony is adapting several other PlayStation titles, including a The Last of Us TV series and a movie based on Ghost of Tsushima. In other words, PlayStation and Sony seem to be diving deep into their vast library of IP, with Gran Turismo as the latest example. Stay tuned for more details as further information is released about the Gran Turismo movie adaptation.
