Gran Turismo 7 was confirmed with a gameplay reveal during Sony's PlayStation 5 showcase. Gran Turismo from Japanese developer Polyphony Digital is a long-running series dedicated to realistic driving and racing simulation, featuring hundreds of licensed vehicles and tracks. Gran Turismo games have featured on every PlayStation home console, and have sold more units than any other PlayStation exclusive franchise in history, beating out heavy-hitters like Uncharted and God of War.
Rumors about an imminent reveal for the next installment in the series began to swirl after a racing cockpit manufacturer accidentally included a Gran Turismo 7 logo in an Instagram post. The company, Next Level Racing, later deleted the post and said it was a mistake from their art department. Later, new trademarks for the franchise name and logo were filed by Sony, one day before the original date for today's PS5 Showcase. Polyphony Digital had previously discussed their goals for the next generation, so it was already apparent that a successor to 2017's Gran Turismo Sport was on its way.
Early in the showcase, and later shared on YouTube, Polyphony Digital confirmed the existence of Gran Turismo 7, complete with a brief look at gameplay. The video showed a look at the game's home screen, which resembled a smartphone interface along with some glamor shots of an incredibly lifelike sports car. A few minutes of traditional racing gameplay followed, entirely within the first-person cockpit view.
No release date was given for the game. When leaked by Next Level Racing, it was said to release within 2020, alongside other games such as Dirt 5, already confirmed as a PlayStation 5 launch title. Gran Turismo 7 would be a huge launch game for the PlayStation 5, but that would likely have been announced if that was the case. The initial look at gameplay suggests the latest installment will be a return to traditional Gran Turismo gameplay, following Gran Turismo Sport's more heavy focus on multiplayer.
While it's very likely that we will learn more about Gran Turismo 7 in the coming days, fans of the series will be delighted to know that it doesn't seem too far away. The games have long been a benchmark for their respective console's visuals, and many of the cars featured in the demo seemed photo-realistic. Gran Turismo 7 will race onto the PlayStation 5 at an undisclosed date.
