Gotham's "Mommy's Little Monster" had Gordon learn the truth about Mayor Galavan. Like Smallville before it, Gotham started as a series that explored young Bruce Wayne's pre-Batman life and the titular city before it was overrun with various themed villains. The world of Gotham was mostly seen through the eyes of young cop James Gordon (Ben McKenzie) as he tried his best to keep the city from imploding. While the show had its share of disturbing violence that was also an unmistakable goofiness to the whole affair.

Gotham was never a major hit with critics but it's endearingly over the top nature saw it attract a fanbase. The show came to an epic conclusion with season five, which was based on the Escape From New York-aping comic book arc "No Man's Land," where Gotham is sealed off from the rest of the country and the villains run amuck. The final episodes of Gotham also found Bruce donning the batsuit and embracing his destiny. The show was always intended to be more of Jim's story than Bruce's, so it's unlikely it will be revived in the future.

Gotham "Mommy's Little Monster" saw the Penguin's conflict with Theo Galavan come to a boil. The episode opens with Penguin coming to rescue his mother from Galavan's grasp, who was kidnapped to blackmail Oswalt. Theo lets Gertrud go but his sister Tabitha then kills her with a knife to the back. Butch also betrays Oswald who barely manages to escape after goading Theo into attacking him and slashing his neck. With Galavan now Mayor, he reports his wounds to Gordon and the GCPD and orders martial law and a curfew on the city to hunt Penguin down.

Of course, Gordon is no fool and has a hard time believing Galavan's story about Penguin trying to kill him. Gotham's "Mommy's Little Monster" sees him piecing together the truth about the new Mayor, and he and Bullock learn from Butch that Galavan kidnapped Penguin's mother and forced him to assassinate the other candidates. Naturally, Oswalt wants revenge and raid's Galavan's celebration party, resulting in a big shootout. Gordon tries to lead Galavan to safety but is confronted by an emotional Penguin; the Mayor orders Jim to kill him, but after Tabhita wounds Oswalt instead, he manages to escape in Theo's limo.

Theo later confronts Jim about defying his orders to kill Penguin, but Gordon reaffirms he's taking down all of Gotham's monster - starting with Galavan. Elsewhere on Gotham's "Mommy's Little Monster," Nygma is tormented into a game by his alter-ego after killing Kringle, and has to follows a trial of riddles to the GCPD, finding her hand in a vending machine and her body in the morgue; the episode ends with his persona's merging. There's also teen melodrama between Bruce, Selina, and Silver, with Selina trying and failing to warn Bruce off Silver, and Selina later spies on the pair kissing.
