FOX announced Gotham season 5 will premiere in January 2019. Several years ago when the comic book TV and movie craze was still growing, FOX decided to get in on the action with a show set in Batman's corner of the DC universe. The series put the focus on Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) becoming the detective that one day becomes an ally to Batman. However, the duo have already crossed paths on several occasions thanks to the young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) who also stars in Gotham.

Throughout the previous four seasons, Gotham has continued to introduce most of Batman's greatest goes, but it is Gordon who often gets the first crack at stopping them. Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) and Riddler (Cory Michael Smith) have been two of the biggest recurring threats that reign over Gotham. The criminal activity and Bruce's own experiences have already started the training process for him to one day become the Dark Knight.

That transformation will happen by the end of season 5, but it still wasn't clear when exactly Gotham would return... until now. FOX has set a January 3, 2019 premiere date for the fifth and final season of Gotham. Although no slot has been officially confirmed, it is expected that Gotham will continue to air in its 8 pm EST slot. In addition to confirming the date, FOX also announced that the final season has been expanded from 10 to 12 episodes.

This return date is much earlier than a previous rumor that claimed Gotham wouldn't return until mid March. Now that we know exactly when the series is returning, it puts a rough schedule in place for the shortened final season, which has now been extended slightly. With January 3 being the beginning, Gotham will have enough content to last till early March. If there are no breaks between the episodes and FOX airs a new one every week, then March 21 would be Gotham's series finale air date.

For fans of Gotham, season 5 is highly anticipated to see how the show wraps up Gordon and Bruce's stories, as well as those of some of the villains. We know that the series finale will feature a massive ten year time jump and show the remaining characters in more comic accurate ways. Penguin will actually be fat in the finale and Bruce will wear a proper Batman suit that is similar to Dark Knight Rises' suit. There's potential for a true Joker to make an appearance and that of so many additional characters, that the finale will quite the sendoff. And now that its confirmed the show returns in January, fans finally get to know when this final journey begins.
