We are two episodes into the third season of Gotham, which was able to squeeze in that second episode after the year's first presidential debate. The first season of Gotham introduced us to series' protagonists Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne, as well as perennial Batman villains, Penguin, Riddler, and Catwoman. Gotham season 2 was applauded for digging deeper into Batman's Rogues Gallery, giving us looks at villains like, Hugo Strange, Mr. Freeze, Clayface, and more. And with Hugo Strange's experiments at Indian Hill creating all kinds of new "monsters," the expectation is that Jim Gordon and company will have even more challenging adversaries to deal with this year.
Some of the major announcements regarding the third season of Gotham included a grown up Poison Ivy, and the introduction of villains Killer Croc, Solomon Grundy, and, perhaps most anticipated, Mad Hatter. Last night's episode briefly introduced us to the now adult Ivy (played by Maggie Geha) - who quickly showed off her villainy, (presumably) murdering a man for not watering his plants. The next big villain to appear on Gotham will be Mad Hatter (played by Samuel Benedict). And while we have seen images of the Alice's Adventures in Wonderland-themed villain before, we now have our first video of him.
After last night's episode of Gotham, FOX released a promo (above) teasing the third episode of season 2, 'Look Into My Eyes'. Clearly, we are being invited into the mad house here.
The promo certainly leads us to believe that Mad Hatter will be featured prominently in Gotham's third episode of the season. And with the third season subtitled "Mad City", it's about time. Samuel Benedict (The Walking Dead) looks genuinely creepy in the role, and looks like he could be one of the character's greater adaptations. The promo does not reveal too much information regarding the Hatter's origins, and it is unclear whether he will have any connection to Indian Hill, despite the tease in season 2. Still, the promo teases an exciting episode of Gotham.
Ed Nygma, who was absent last night, looks to be back this episode, and interestingly, in plain clothes. Perhaps Mad Hatter will have some connection to his release (or escape) from Arkham. It also appears like we will see the reunion between Jim Gordon and Lee Thompkins, which is bound to be complicated - after Gordon saw her with another man, and with Jim now initiating romantic tension with Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung). We also get a quick glimpse of Penguin at gunpoint, and Bruce with Selina. However, the most intriguing part of the promo is clearly the end, where Gordon stands atop a tall building, possibly ready to jump.
Mad Hatter is known in the comics to employ various kinds of mind control, so, perhaps, he tries to get rid of Gordon by forcing him to commit suicide. While that plan will clearly fail, it does tease what kind of adversary Mad Hatter will be. We will find out for sure next week.
Gotham continues next Monday with ‘Mad City: Look Into My Eyes’ @8pm on FOX.
