Following on from yesterday's reveal that the show's Bruce Wayne doppelganger will be sporting a dramatic dark look, the Gotham news continues to come thick and fast as we continue to edge closer to the season 3 premiere. The show, which centers around Detective James Gordon and features a host a younger versions of characters from the Batman canon, has divided opinion among viewers, and the show's third season will likely be a make-or-break affair.
In anticipation of the forthcoming September premiere, Fox has now released an official synopsis for the new season, which offers plenty of hints as to where the show will be heading in the upcoming season:
Gordon works in a monster-ridden Gotham as a bounty hunter and seeks to find answers about the Indian Hill escapees and why their powers appear to be killing them. Meanwhile, Bruce’s doppelganger roams the streets and Barbara and Tabitha open a new nightclub called The Sirens in the all-new “Mad City: Better to Reign in Hell…”
While it had already been reported that the first episode's title would be 'Better To Reign In Hell...', the 'Mad City' tagline is arguably the most interesting element here. The phrase heavily implies a sizeable role for the forthcoming Mad Hatter and suggests that, following on from the events of the season two finale, Gotham will be plunged into disarray. Adding to the sense of impending chaos is the news that Jim Gordon is now a vigilante, and many fans may be hoping this development signals a reduced role for the crime-procedural elements of the show.
News that Barbara and Tabitha have gone into the nightclub business is unlikely to get pulses racing, but long-time Batman fans may know that 'Sirens' is the name of comic series centered on popular female characters such as Poison Ivy, Harley Quinn and Catwoman. Whether this is a legitimate connection or mere coincidence is yet to be seen but with two of those characters already in play in Gotham, a female villain team-up in the wake of the city's chaos could definitely be on the cards, and fans have already speculated that Barbara Kean will become the show's Harley.
The synopsis ends with an updated cast list which reads more or less as you'd expect but interestingly, Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett-Smith), Valerie Vale (Jamie Chung) and Poison Ivy (Clare Foley) are all listed as 'Guest Cast'. With Gotham continuing to add new characters faster than it gets rid of older, perhaps even stale, ones, season 3 is arguably in danger of becoming an over-crowded affair. There remains plenty to get excited about, however with the introduction of Mad Hatter, a consistently wonderful Riddler performance from Cory Michael Smith and a move away from Jim Gordon's day job as a detective.
Gotham season three premieres on 19th September on Fox.
