The Gotham television series is a concept big enough to feature a wide variety of characters and stories. This helps explain the show's large ensemble cast, even if it means Ben McKenzie's Jim Gordon, the lead character, suffers in the process. Season three is on the way and with news of an expanded presence of villains, one can only hope this show finds enough room for everyone.
As is to be expected, as the season draws closer, audiences are getting more looks at the cast, with hints at what to expect. Given how the core cast has largely stayed the same, it is not surprising to be getting looks at certain characters; though it will be interesting to learn more about what they are up to and what is next for them. For now, the viewers can at least have some new fancy portraits.
FOX has officially released eight cast photos for the upcoming third season of Gotham. Stars Ben McKenzie, David Mazouz, Jada Pinkett Smith, Robin Lord Taylor, Jessica Lucas, Drew Powell, Camren Bicondova, and Erin Richards are all featured. Curiously missing, however, are other series mainstays Donal Logue, Sean Pertwee, Cory Michael Smith, and Chris Chalk. This could just be a part of the roll out of cast photos, in which case we will be sure to keep you updated.
These character portraits only deal with the main cast of course, but you at least get a sense that the cast has continued to mature over the course of its run. As far as the rest of the third season is concerned, it has been revealed the Court of Owls will be explored more and other new characters and members of Batman's rogue's gallery, including the Mad Hatter will get their origin stories as well.
Additionally, here's a brief synopsis of what season three is said to offer:
The stakes are higher than ever as Gotham explores the origin stories of some of the most ambitious and depraved Super Villains, including The Riddler, The Joker and Mr. Freeze, and Bruce Wayne uncovers more secrets from his father’s past.
There is not much to glean from not getting all the character portraits, as it is surely just a matter of what Fox has decided to release so far. If anything, there should be more thoughts on whether or not certain characters (including Morena Baccarin's Dr. Leslie Tompkins) will still be part of the main cast at all. Given how things played out with Jim Gordon going to jail (and eventually escaping and being pardoned) last season, a lot is in the air regarding that relationship.
It would also be much more interesting to see posters of the various villains we will be meeting or being reintroduced to this season, such as the new Poison Ivy and new crime boss Mario Falcone. Obviously FOX will reveal these things in due time, but it could certainly help drive up interest, while viewers wait.
Gotham season 3 premieres September 19th, 2016 on FOX.
