[SPOILERS for Gotham season 1 ahead.]
Early on in season 1 of Gotham, the show was filled with an abundance of villains. Instead of choosing to focus on just one of Batman's future foes, it attempted to encompass many, which did not work out that well initially. But later on, after shifting focus to Robin Lord Taylor's breakout role as Oswald Cobblepot/Penguin, it seemed the series had finally found its footing.
Now with season 2 already on its way, there are many new directions that Gotham could go in. With Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) gone, the show is going to need another villain for Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and the rest of GCPD to take on. As the cast has previously discussed, that villain could very well be Edward Nygma/The Riddler, portrayed in season 1 by Cory Michael Smith. The ending of season 1 set up Nygma to go down a darker path, which we will likely see come to fruition in this next season.
However, if that does happen, Nygma won't be the only new villain on Gotham. A report from Deadline indicates that two new villains will be heading to the city for season 2: Theo Galavan and his sister Tabitha, a new version of the DC supervillain Tigress.
James Frain (True Blood) will play Theo, described as a "billionaire industrialist" and "the savior the city has been waiting for." Initially, Theo will be depicted as "heroic" and "lovingly devoted to his sister," until it is revealed that the two are hiding a vengeful agenda that could threaten Gotham like never before and lead to other new villains joining the fray. According to a previous report on the matter, the early description for Tabitha outlines her as a "sexy knock-out” female villain in her “mid-to-late 20s," but this role has not yet been cast.
Traditionally in the comics, Tigress has been a superhuman with superior fighting skills as well as being highly trained. Not only that, but she is an expert marksman with her crossbow. Like Gotham has done before, however, it seems that they're reinventing the character to accommodate her role in the show.
With Theo being connected to Gotham's elite, perhaps we will get to see a side of the city that has yet to be explored in the show. During season 1, the underground of Gotham was arguably the central focus, with Mooney and several other mob bosses acting as the primary antagonists. Now, with Mooney gone and the Galavan siblings incoming, the show could very well shift to a different angle, while also staying with Gotham's underground through Cobblepot and Nygma.
The Galavan siblings are just the latest addition the main cast for Gotham season 2. Other characters like Dr. Leslie Thompkins (Morena Baccarin), Harvey Dent (Nicholas D’Agosto), and Lucius Fox (Chris Chalk) are all being promoted to series regulars on Gotham season 2. Several other villains will be joining in the fun as well, meaning Gotham is going to be more crowded than ever before.
Gotham season 2 will premiere on FOX in Fall 2015.
