Relatively young Gotham City cop Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) faced a number of threats during season 1 of Gotham. To be honest, the city's gang war and the rise to power of Oswald Cobblepot (Robin Lord Taylor) alone would have kept him plenty busy, even if he hadn't been forced to deal with the many other baddies that popped up (Red Mask, young Joker, Electrocutioner, and so forth).
However, Gordon is set to be even more overwhelmed by the city's criminal element when season 2 of the Fox series rolls around next month. Dubbed "The Rise of the Villains", the upcoming batch of episodes will see the growing prominence of a number of season 1 characters (including pivotal arcs for both the Riddler and Selina Kyle/Catwoman (Camren Bicondova)), as well as the introduction of several new ones.
Now, according to Deadline, another baddie is heading to Gotham. Leo Fitzpatrick has been cast in the recurring role of Joe Pike, leader of a group of arsonists known as the Pike Brothers. The character doesn't appear to have any ties to the comic books (at least based on the Deadline description), though Fitzpatrick has tons of television experience under his belt. In the past few years, the actors has appeared on shows like Banshee, Blue Bloods, Burn Notice and Sons of Anarchy, as well as a recurring role on the first three seasons of The Wire.
The fact that Gotham is throwing in an original villain in the mix for season 2 is a smart move. After all, most of the current or rising foes need to be around to face the Dark Knight when young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) finally dons the cape and cowl. Limiting itself to strictly marquee villains could rob the show of some of its suspense - and with Fish Mooney (Jada Pinkett Smith) unlikely to reappear anytime soon, the time has come to bring in some new characters, such as Michael Chiklis' Captain Nathaniel Barnes.
Thus far, it's unclear how Pike will fit into the season's overall narrative, which looks like it will largely focus on billionaire Theo Galavan (James Frain) and his sister, Tabitha (Jessica Lucas), who ultimately becomes the supervillain Tigress. Likely, a number of shaky alliances will be formed between the many villains roaming the streets of Gotham next season - and considering that Pike doesn't have a presence in traditional Batman mythos, it may not end well for him.
Gotham season 2 premiere Monday, September 21, 2015 at 8pm on Fox.
