FOX's Gotham spent its debut season following one of Gotham City's only un-corrupted cops, Jim Gordon (Ben McKenzie) and his partner Harvey Bullock (Donal Logue), as they went up against the rival crime syndicates of Carmine Falcone and Salvatore Maroni, along with the power struggle between Falcone and Fish Mooney. Meanwhile, the Penguin (Robin Lord Taylor) plotted his rise to power and young Bruce Wayne (David Mazouz) searched for the truth behind his parents' death.
With Gotham's second season set to premiere shortly, FOX has been releasing a number of clips from the upcoming season, which finds the Penguin having removed Falcone, Maroni, and Mooney from the equation and taken over the city's criminal enterprises. Gordon, meanwhile, has set his sights on taking down the corrupt Commissioner Loeb (Peter Scolari) and made a powerful enemy in the process.
Now, in two new clips from the season 2 premiere, 'Damned If You Do,' we get a glimpse at the price of Gordon's crusading. In the first clip, which you can watch above, Loeb dismisses Gordon from the force, over the objections of Captain Sarah Essen (Zabryna Guevara). Gordon leaves, but not before promising to "break" Loeb.
Given the known synopsis of Gotham's season 2 premiere, it's not a surprise to see him going to the Penguin. In this next clip, Gordon does just that. Take a look below:
Gordon reminds the new King of Gotham that he's only alive thanks to his actions. Now, Gordon appears to place himself directly into the Penguin's pocket. Even if the future commissioner carries out the Penguin's request - making them "even" in theory - Gordon and the Penguin are nowhere near finished with each other.
The theme for season 2 is "Rise of the Villains," with the previously released clips focusing on this aspect of Gotham. From Barbara Kean's introduction to the young "Joker" to the villains uniting, and the fact that Selina Kyle (Camren Bicondova) is evidently now part of the Penguin's inner circle (a development which fits into her later identity as Catwoman), this next chapter in the saga of Gotham before Batman appears to be stacking the deck with unformed versions of the Dark Knight's famous Rogue's Gallery. And from what we've seen so far, the showrunners seem to have learned from their first season missteps.
Gotham season 2 premieres Monday, September 21 on FOX.
