The trailer for next week's midseason finale of Gotham shows a war igniting in the streets and the return of Jerome. As Gotham embraces its comic roots more and more each season, it's also become flooded with serial killers and supervillains. Scarecrow kicked off season 4 of the series and teased his evolution as one of the city's future big bads. The past few episodes, meanwhile, have seen Gotham immersed in the threat of the diabolical Professor Pyg.

Played to perfection by Michael Cerveris (Fringe), Pyg has killed corrupt cops, ruffled Penguin's feathers, and forced Gotham's elite to literally eat the poor. The villain is easily one of the show's most deranged, with Cerveris ramping up the camp and scenery chewing even for a Gotham rogue. But as fun as Pyg is, fans are still eager for the show's original lunatic to return: Jerome. Essentially Gotham's take on The Joker, Jerome has flitted in and out of the series for the past few seasons. We last saw him earlier this year when Gotham returned from its winter break, and this season will see him usher in the midseason finale.

FOX released the promo for next week's episode of Gotham, 'Queen Takes Knight,' which will see the show head into its winter break. Picking up from the events of last night's episode, Sophia will join forces with the Sirens to go to war with Penguin for the criminal underworld of Gotham. Caught in the middle will be newly appointed Captain Gordon, and the tease of Jerome at the end of the trailer shows the detective will have a lot on his plate.

The last time we saw Jerome, Gordon was on the hunt for him as the serial killer drove the city into chaos. The villain also finally came face to face with Bruce Wayne, marking one of the few times the budding vigilante was in on the main story. While Bruce is currently taking a hedonistic break from his training as the Dark Knight, perhaps Jerome's return will jolt him back to his senses.

Whatever choice Bruce makes, it doesn't look like it will come easy. He's spent the past few episodes partying with his friends, much to the chagrin of Alfred. In the promo for the midseason finale, it looks like the two will finally come to blows. Hopefully, this will be Bruce's rock bottom and the second half of the season will see him resume his vigilante duties.

Now that Gordon finally has the GCPD under his control, he's no longer alone as the sole champion of law in Gotham. But with more and more villains coming out of the woodwork, Gotham the show and city will need their future Batman to step up soon.
