Gotham Knights is just one of DC's upcoming video games, but its release date might be delayed again. This Gotham-set game will occur shortly after Batman's death and will therefore see his Bat-Family continuing his mission and upholding his legacy. Players will play as Batgirl, Nightwing, Robin, and Red Hood as they spar against Gotham's Court of Owls. In a chess game of bats versus owls, Batman will be sorely missed, though some are theorizing that Batman may be Gotham Knights' villain. Off-screen deaths typically feel suspicious, after all.
Little being known about Gotham Knights makes an early 2022 release date feel unlikely. DC and Marvel games like this can feel at times as though they don't need a lot of information revealed since they're based on comic book material - and therefore a lot of plot points remain the same, or at least similar - but many potential players will likely want to know more than the game's four playable characters before spending money on it. The Court of Owl's motive and goals remain unclear, and Gotham Knight's gameplay hasn't been explored much either. Gotham's five factions in Gotham Knights are known, though, meaning players can expect a semi-open world rather than a fully open one.
Gotham Knights' release date is largely in question because little remains known about it despite its release year rapidly approaching - but this isn't the only reason. Other DC games, by comparison, have much more known about them. Key here is Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, which is also slated for a 2022 release. Despite both games gearing up for a release next year, only one of these games is experiencing a large marketing push. Moreover, Gotham Knights only just received a story trailer at the 2021 DC FanDome event in October. This left players with more questions, such as how Gotham Knights' Red Hood was resurrected.
Gotham Knights Doesn't Have the Same Marketing Push As Suicide Squad
Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League continues the Batman: Arkham series of video games and sees the titular team of villains united in a fight against the Justice League. This time, however, the Justice League is being controlled by the comic book favorite Brainiac, who's just come to Earth for a mysterious purpose. Like Gotham Knights, this game has 4 playable characters - Harley Quinn, Deadshot, Captain Boomerang, and King Shark - and they can be freely controlled and switched. However, Suicide Squad's shooter mechanics are already under fire based on pre-release footage.
While it's unfortunate that some of Suicide Squad's mechanics appear rough so far, it's at least positive that fans have seen this footage from the game. Gotham Knights, on the other hand, has seen much less gameplay and cinematic footage released. Meanwhile, Suicide Squad's gameplay trailer shows the player able to fly around the map, which is based on Metropolis, after being ordered to kill Flash because he's under Brainiac's control. Fans even know already that Suicide Squad's King Shark eats people in this game just like in his source material and this year's James Gunn-directed movie.
Ultimately, Gotham Knights' release date might be delayed because players seemingly know next to nothing about it. At the very least, Suicide Squad will release before Gotham Knights, which is apparent from the game's stronger marketing push and how fans have simply seen more of it. At this rate, it's likely that the game will be a holiday 2022 release instead, giving the game's developers and marketers enough time to finish all of their preparations. Only then might fans see the pros and cons of Batman's death in Gotham Knights.
