Players looking to fight crime on the streets of Gotham are keeping an eagle eye out for a release date for the newest Batman game, Gotham Knights. After being announced in August 2020, developer WB Games Montreal has been fairly quiet about the project, but a new social media tease may point in the direction of a release date.

Gotham Knights is the latest video game to take place in the world of Batman, but it is not a follow-up to the hit Arkham trilogy that concluded with Batman: Arkham Knight. In fact, Gotham Knights will not star Batman at all, but four of his protégés: Batgirl, Nightwing, Red Hood and Robin. Players will be able to play the game either solo or through online co-op, and can switch between any of the four heroes. Gotham Knights will be set over several nights, as players contend with multiple villain plots and unraveling the mystery surrounding the secretive group, the Court of Owls.

Officially, WB Games Montreal has only announced that Gotham Knights would release in 2021. A recent post from the official Gotham Knights Twitter account, however, may be teasing an actual release date. At first glance, the post is an innocuous image of a stack of presents for the various heroes of Gotham, with WB Games Montreal wishing the community Happy Holidays. But featured fairly prominently in the image is a poster for The Flying Graysons, with appearance dates of July 16-July 21. The Flying Graysons was the performing name for Dick Grayson (Nightwing) and his parents before their tragic death; the boldness of the numbers in the poster has led the internet to speculate that the release date for Gotham Knights might be July 16th, 2021.

Will Gotham Knights Be Delayed?

With no official confirmation from WB Games Montreal, the dates on the poster in the Gotham Knights tweet might simply be a red herring. This is not, however, the first time that a DC game has teased information through social media posts. Before announcing Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, Rocksteady tweeted an image of a strange looking Superman with a crosshairs logo that said "Suicide Squad." That tease came ahead of the DC FanDome event that officially announced the Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, alongside a trailer.

Production slowdowns caused by COVID have wreaked all kinds of havoc with release schedules, so it's not surprising that WB Games Montreal has not yet confirmed any tentative kind of release date for Gotham Knights. No studio wants to go through the PR hassle of having to push a game's launch if it can be avoided. Still, the holiday teaser post for Gotham Knights is promising, and it's possible the game will be in the hands of would-be superheroes by the end of the summer.
