A recent leak suggests that Gotham Knights will allow four players to join forces in online co-op, despite previous reports that the game would only support two. Teamwork appears to be a primary tenant of WB Montreal’s upcoming superhero adventure, as Gotham Knights sees Batman’s former protégés Nightwing, Batgirl, Red Hood, and Robin unite to protect Gotham City from a sinister organization called the Court of Owls in addition to classic Batman villains like Mr. Freeze and the Penguin after the mysterious death of the Dark Knight himself. Gotham Knights will also serve as a reboot of Rocksteady’s critically-acclaimed Batman: Arkham series, which WB Montreal once contributed to with the 2013 prequel Batman: Arkham Origins.

Gotham Knights’ interesting setup seems tailor-made for a multiplayer co-op experience, and WB Montreal has previously stated that it will allow two players to team up online in addition to a dark single-player campaign. However, while the game features four playable protagonists, the developers have only indicated that two will be playable in Gotham Knights' co-op at once - likely to maintain the stealth gameplay that Gotham Knights has inherited from the Batman: Arkham series and prevent the inevitable boss battles against the likes of Mr. Freeze from being too chaotic. Still, some fans wish that they could play as all four of Gotham Knights’ heroes at once through online multiplayer, and it looks like they could get that wish after all.

A Reddit user by the handle of SuspiciousTension19 recently posted a screenshot from Gotham Knights’ PlayStation Network page to r/GothamKnights, one that suggests that the game could feature four-player online multiplayer. However, PCGamesN notes that Gotham Knights' description still reads that the game can be experienced “in solo-play or with one other hero,” leaving some to speculate that Gotham Knights will feature a separate four-player online mode in addition to the main campaign. Of course, it’s also possible that the four-player listing mentioned on the Gotham Knights PSN page is a mistake, and that the game will only support a two-player co-op mode as previously reported.

If this Gotham Knights leak is legitimate, it may have come too early: Gotham Knights was recently featured as part of a trailer for next month’s big Summer Games Fest event, which will showcase several upcoming triple-A blockbusters in place of the canceled E3 2022 and possibly serve as the official announcement of Gotham Knights' supposed four-player co-op. Official details regarding Gotham Knights have slowed a bit since it was last shown off during DC Fandome 2021, but WB Montreal has confirmed that Gotham Knights will be released in October despite rumors that it would be delayed once more. However, Batman fans who haven’t upgraded to current-gen consoles might be out of luck, as a listing from the Taiwanese rating board has hinted that Gotham Knights will only be available on the PS5 and Xbox Series X/S when it launches later this year.

WB Montreal has previously stood by its claims that Gotham Knights would only feature two-player co-op, but it's possible that the game’s previous delay from its initial 2021 release window allowed the developer more time to properly implement multiplayer support for all four members of Gotham Knights' crimefighting team - either in the game’s storyline or in a separate multiplayer mode like in Batman: Arkham Origins. Assuming the PSN screenshot SuspiciousTension19 shared isn’t a typo, fans could look forward to teaming up with three of their friends to save the day when Gotham Knights finally leaps into action this fall.
