Fans of the Bat-Family received good news out of San Diego Comic-Con with the announcement of Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City, a tie-in prequel to the upcoming Gotham Knights video game. The comic shows Batman team up with his allies to stop an apocalyptic virus that has hit Gotham in the final case before his death.

The news dropped at Comic-Con as part of the DC's Gotham panel, moderated by DC executive editor Ben Abernathy and featuring Bat-Family comic writers Ram V, Sean Gordon Murphy, Tini Howard and Jock. Gotham Knights - Gilded City shows Gotham City overcome by an unusual virus, leaving its yellowed-eyed victims in an enraged state that drives them to violence and crime. Batman attempts to contain and stop the outbreak, joined by the four playable characters from Gotham Knights: Nightwing, Red Hood, Batgirl and Tim Drake's Robin. As the Bat-Family searches for more information regarding the virus, they uncover the history of the Runaway, an early Gotham vigilante who dealt with a similar outbreak in the 1800s.

Gilded City holds a lot of promise for both casual readers and future players of upcoming video game. Because Gotham Knights takes place in a new universe (separate from the previous Batman: Arkham series), Gilded City will be able to provide some context to the Bat-Family of this world. Taking on such a major threat to their city will hopefully give readers a good idea of this version of the characters' personalities while seeing them work together as a team prior to Batman's death. The inclusion of the Runaway, a crime-fighter who mixes Batman's Zorro aesthetic with a cowboy-styled costume, adds an interesting bit of lore to the universe while strengthening the game's theme that Gotham needs a hero after - and before - Bruce's mission.

Comic fans likely know better than to expect Bruce Wayne to stay dead for the entirety of Gotham Knights, but the Comic Con announcement of Batman: Gotham Knights - Gilded City still teases a nice chance to see how this world's Batman operated before his death. The comic's look at the Bat-Family interacting during an apocalypse-level threat to Gotham will only make Gotham Knights more impactful to players as it further fleshes out the video game's world.
