New information about Gotham Knights character customization reveals a much more robust system than the paid cosmetics present in Marvel's Avengers. The upcoming cooperative superhero title, developed by WB Games Montreal, will see Batgirl, Robin, Nightwing and Red Hood become Gotham's premier protectors after the untimely death of Batman. Many gamers have compared Gotham Knights to Marvel's Avengers, a multiplayer Marvel game created by Crystal Dynamics, but details suggest that the upcoming game includes much deeper customization options.

Created by Batman: Arkham Origins developer WB Games Montreal, Gotham Knights will put an exciting fresh spin on the Dark Knight's world. The game sees Batman's closest allies step up to fill the void left by the Caped Crusader's death, while also facing off against the mysterious Court of Owls. Players can choose between Gotham Knights' four playable characters at any time, and online multiplayer will let two players team up to defend Gotham. An in-depth customization system was teased during a recent Gotham Knights gameplay showcase, and now WB Games Montreal has shed even more light on the system.

Reddit user cbudd1117 recently shared new Gotham Knights details that were revealed during a Discord Q&A with Gotham Knights developers. Game Director Geoff Ellenor answered multiple questions about the game's customization mechanics, revealing a much more complex system than the one featured in Marvel's Avengers. Each of the game's costumes has a visual style, a colorway, and gameplay stats that can be mixed and matched to suit a player's preferences. Each suit's mask, logo, gloves and footwear can also be individually changed, and the Batfamily's primary weapons have unique styles and stats too. Using this system, Gotham Knights players can dramatically alter each hero's appearance using items earned through gameplay.

Marvel's Avengers recently added a comic-inspired Kree nanotech suit for Ms. Marvel, and this addition demonstrates the flaws of the game's cosmetic system. While Gotham Knights will let players customize each part of a hero's design, from their gloves to their mask to their color scheme, Marvel's Avengers suits change the hero's entire model. While the game does feature different gear, unlike Gotham Knights these items do not affect Earth's Mightiest Heroes visually. Most of the game's costumes, like the newly-added Ms. Marvel nanotech suit, also must be purchased with real money rather than being earned through gameplay.

The two projects may look similar, but Gotham Knights looks to deliver a much more robust customization system than Marvel's Avengers did. The World's Greatest Detective simulator will let players change multiple aspects of a hero's outfit, which will no doubt result in some truly unique flair. A lack of microtransactions also makes every option available to every Gotham Knights player, setting it apart from Marvel's Avengers and its microtransaction marketplace.
