Gotham was one of the most interesting takes on the Batman origin story that we've seen in quite some time. The show only featured Batman in one episode and decided to instead focus on Commissioner Jim Gordon, along with Bruce Wayne's more steady transformation into The Dark Knight.
The show featured a great cast of villains, but also a ton of heroes from the Batman mythos (and some original characters). Today we're going to take a look back and examine ten different characters that would have made for great villains. Let's get into it.
Lee
We actually got a little taste of Lee being a villain at one point in the series, when she hated Jim and was under the influence of the virus. She forced Jim to take the virus in order to save himself from death. It was certainly one of the more iconic moments of the show.
Lee would have been a very powerful villain, because she was an incredibly smart person in general. She managed to run The Narrows and become a beacon of hope for the citizens, so imagine the power she would have wielded as a villain.
Harvey
Harvey was by Jim's side throughout all of Gotham. Well you know, most of it. Everyone goes rogue at some point or another, it's just part of the job. Harvey would have made for a good villain because he had a connection to just about everyone else in the show, so Harvey becoming evil would put everyone else in a rough situation.
We should mention that going forward, people who were villains under the Tetch virus don't count because there would be no one left to write about. Literally everyone in the entire city had that virus.
Alfred
Alfred has all of the makings of a strong villain. He taught Bruce Wayne everything he knows. As such, he'd be an incredibly adept villain.
Lucky for us, he wouldn't have access to Bruce's monumental funds as a villain, so he wouldn't exactly be an opposite Bruce. He'd be similar to a solid B+ villain. Not one of the most important villains, but one that you do need to consistently watch out for.
Selina
In line with Catwoman's character, Selina never became a full villain during Gotham, save for the final season in a few episodes here and there. Throughout the remainder of the show, Selina straddled the line between good and bad, usually tilting toward the good side of things.
Seeing how a younger Selina would have truly embodied a full villain role would have been interesting. Unfortunately, she always stayed in a neutral position, which still played very well with the character. Still crying about the fact that she and Bruce were almost together until he left her for years. Tragic.
Lucius
Lucius was somewhat of a minor player throughout the show, but was always present and a part of the plans that the main crew was concocting. His incredible intellect was his most used asset throughout his time on the show, so this would translate into his villain persona as well.
Naturally, he'd make an interesting villain. He'd probably fall into a similar position as Nygma, just with less of the whole split personality thing. And the loss of the ability to tell riddles for half of the show. Get rid of that stuff and you're close to Lucius.
Mario Falcone
Mario Falcone was somewhat of an underused character and eventually ended up being a jumping-off point to hit Lee and Gordon's lowest point in the entire show. He ended up being shot by Gordon, as he was under the influence of the Tetch virus, and was moving to attack Lee. It would have been interesting to see his story play out a bit differently.
Maybe he wasn't the above board person that he was during the show, he's a Falcone for crying out loud, but who knows what he could have done. Unfortunately, we didn't get to see much of Mario Falcone.
Jim Gordon
Jim did some questionable things during the show’s run, but he never became a villain. He got a little Tetchy but, as we said earlier, who didn't? It would have been interesting to see maybe a small arc that pushed Gordon to villainy for a bit.
He obviously couldn't stay evil for too long, but it would have been interesting to see. He was clearly one of the strongest characters the show had to offer, so he would have flourished as a villain. Too bad we never got that arc from Gordon. He just got angsty every once in a while.
The Mayor
And now, on to the minor characters. Aubrey was a horrible character. He was an incredible pushover to basically any villain that called on him ever, so if there had been some sort of interesting twist that showed Aubrey had his own motivations the whole time, it could have been fun.
But that didn't happen. He was just kind of a trashy person and would do anything to keep himself safe. Bad, but not quite fully villainous.
Alvarez
Alvarez was one of the GCPD officers who wasn't just a basic background character, so he actually had some development here and there. He also fell under the Tetch virus! It was EVERYONE. Anyway, he was a strong, virtuous officer, so seeing him turn to villainy would have been interesting.
Unfortunately, he didn't get enough development to know exactly how he would have functioned as a full-on villain of Gotham City.
Harper
Harper was another important officer. There were two! She could be seen at Gordon's side through all of his important moments, so seeing her turn to villainy would have come as a big surprise for viewers and Gordon alike.
Alas, she was a hero throughout the show's run. She also didn't die, either. That's pretty impressive for being an officer of the Gotham Police Department, so credit where it's due.
