Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3!Star-Lord's grandpa's name in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 might tease a shocking change to Peter Quill's backstory for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The MCU has revealed plenty of information about Star-Lord's past throughout the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy. His mother died when he was only eight years old, leading to him being abducted by Yondu, who was on orders to deliver Peter to Ego, his Celestial father. It was not until Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 that Star-Lord met his father and a bigger family tree became possible, leading to the revelation that Mantis is Peter's sister.

While Guardians of the Galaxy 3 is primarily focused on telling Rocket's story, including his tragic backstory, the film also does include some important development for Star-Lord. This includes his return to Earth in Guardians of the Galaxy 3's ending to reunite with his grandfather. Peter stayed away from Earth for decades after his mother's death due to the pain associated with the planet. However, Mantis gets through to him during the threequel that it is not right that he has left his grandfather alone all these years, which leads to their reunion. This includes revealing a potential change to Star-Lord's MCU backstory with his grandpa's name.

GOTG 3 Revealed Peter Quill’s Grandpa Is Named Jason (Is He J’Son?)

Prior to their scene together in Guardians of the Galaxy 3's post-credits scene, the movie confirms that Peter Quill's grandpa is named Jason Quill. While Gregg Henry played the character in both of the previous Guardians of the Galaxy movies, he was only ever credited as "Grandpa" and "Grandpa Quill." The MCU waited until Peter Quill travels to his grandpa's house on Earth near the end of the threequel to have him say that he is looking for Jason Quill. While the name might not seemingly mean much to the average viewer, it does hold a connection to Star-Lord's backstory in the comics.

Naming Star-Lord's grandpa Jason is one of Guardians of the Galaxy 3's Easter eggs, as it references the character J'Son. While the MCU made a change to Peter's origin to make him part Celestial and Ego's son, the comics established that J'Son is Star-Lord's father. Considering Ego was not around at all when Peter was a kid, his grandpa in many ways was the father figure in his life at an early age. It is a nice touch for Guardians of the Galaxy 3 to include and reference the close relationship that Peter had with his grandpa and allude to his comic family at the same time.

Theory: Star-Lord Is The Grandson Of The Spartax Empire’s Ruler

How Old Is Star-Lord In Guardians of the Galaxy 3

There is a chance that Star-Lord's grandpa's name might have a greater impact on his MCU backstory, making it much more than a Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Easter egg. The comic version of J'Son is best known as the Emperor of Spartax. He becomes the ruler of the Spartax Empire following the humanoid aliens going to war with the Badoon, a reptile-like alien race that is often aligned with Thanos in the comics. J'Son rules Spartax for years and attempts to get Star-Lord and the Guardians of the Galaxy to join his empire. It leads to Star-Lord showing J'Son's true colors to the people of Spartax, who overthrow him.

The MCU has never introduced the idea of the Spartax Empire or alluded to J'Son's existence, but Guardians of the Galaxy 3's reveal could mean that Star-Lord's grandpa is the shared universe's equivalent. If that is true, this would mean that Star-Lord is the grandson of Spartax Empire's former ruler and thus cosmic royalty. Star-Lord's grandpa could have come to Earth in the early 1900s after losing the throne, fleeing from his responsibilities, or other scenarios. He could then have started a family with a human woman, leading to Meredith Quill's birth, and eventually remaining around to watch Peter be born.

How Star-Lord’s Spartax Connection Would Change His MCU Future

The possibility that Star-Lord's MCU backstory does include a connection to Spartax could have major implications for his MCU future. Guardians of the Galaxy 3's post-credits scenes show Peter and his grandpa spending time together on Earth before confirming that Star-Lord will return. It is possible that the time they spend together includes Jason Quill finally coming true about who he really is. The revelation of Star-Lord's Spartax connection could be what draws Peter back to space one way or another. Learning that he is a royal descendant of the Spartax Empire could lead him to figure out what they are like now.

Star-Lord's MCU future after Guardians of the Galaxy 3 could include him becoming a key player in a new galactic war. The MCU has not done a great job of exploring the cosmos and other powerful alien empires so far. The epic Kree/Skrull war mostly occurred in the background and past, while other major alien races like the Badoon, Shi'ar, Annihilation Wave, and others have yet to be introduced. Star-Lord traveling to Spartax could lead to him becoming entangled in their ongoing conflicts, which might be the result of Peter's grandpa leaving. His future could then lie with aiding or defeating the Spartax Empire.

Star-Lord’s New MCU Backstory Means Another Family Member Can Appear

Star-Lord Mantis Siblings Related In MCU

The Guardians of the Galaxy 3 Easter egg for Star-Lord's grandpa's name might also change Peter's backstory by bringing another family member into the MCU. This might have even been foreshadowed through Marvel giving Peter the new Legendary Star-Lord name. In the Legendary Star-Lord comic run from 2014 that the name is inspired by, Peter learns that he has a half-sister named Victoria, who is Spartax's current Emperor. The MCU could introduce Victoria as another member of Star-Lord's family, although the specific way they are related would likely change. Marvel Studios just did the secret half-sister twist for Star-Lord with Mantis in The Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.

This would likely mean that the familial bond between Star-Lord and Empress Victoria would need to change. The good news is that the theory that Grandpa Quill is the MCU's version of J'Son makes that easier to explain. Since Peter would be J'Son's grandson in the MCU, it could be revealed that Victoria is also J'Son's granddaughter. This would make Star-Lord and Victoria cousins instead of siblings, allowing their potential fight for the Spartax throne to still come because they are related. Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 makes this all possible depending on how Marvel wants to build on the reveal of Star-Lord's grandpa's name.
