Writer/director James Gunn opens up about his feelings of why one Olivia Newton-John song won't be included in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. The third installment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will come over five years after the release of its predecessor, with development having been hampered by Gunn's brief dismissal by Disney following conservative publications' resurfacing of controversial old tweets. Shortly after being hired by Warner Bros. for the DC Extended Universe sequel The Suicide Squad, Marvel and Disney would reverse their decision and bring him back.

Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 will feature the returns of primary stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Bradley Cooper, Vin Diesel, Karen Gillan and Pom Klementieff. Plot details are currently being kept under wraps on the threequel, which is expected to be Gunn's final MCU project and the end of the primary team, a plan Gunn has teased in the years since the first film's release. With production concluded on the already released The Suicide Squad and its highly-anticipated HBO Max spin-off series Peacemaker, filming is expected to begin on Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 in November.

As he gears up to begin production on the film next month, one fan took to Twitter to ask Gunn to include Olivia Newton-John's "Xanadu" in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. Though expressing his love for the Oscar and Golden Globe winner, Gunn expressed his aversion to including soundtrack songs in the MCU franchise and revealed a story connecting him to Newton-John. Since the first Guardians of the Galaxy movie put Gunn's unique music sensibility on the map, fans have eagerly awaited to hear the track list of each of his new projects. Gunn himself has been pretty particular about what songs he chooses to include in his films, namely the Guardians of the Galaxy franchise, most notably King Harvest's "Dancing in the Moonlight," which he stated last year he's had thousands of requests to include and refuses to do so believing it to be "hackneyed." Ironically enough, the 1972 track was used by video game developer Telltale Games for its Guardians of the Galaxy series in 2017.

While Gunn may have an aversion to utilizing Newton-John's "Xanadu" in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3, it doesn't necessarily mean the track will never be a part of the Marvel cosmic team's world. As evidenced by Telltale's game as well as the Disneyland ride connected to Gunn's films and Square Enix's upcoming video game, there are a number of other avenues for the 1980 song to make it on to Star-Lord's Walkman in the near future. Only time will tell what tracks Gunn does have in store for the MCU threequel when Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 hits theaters on May 5, 2023.
