The first episode of HBO Max's Gossip Girl reboot will air on The CW one day after it arrives on streaming. The original Gossip Girl, based on the books by Cecily von Ziegesar, was a CW staple throughout its 6 season run. Audiences were drawn to the tales of Manhattan's elite, made up of young socialites whose shocking exploits were frequently covered by the titular anonymous blogger. It's because Gossip Girl is so popular that HBO Max sought to reboot it for a new generation.

The latest iteration of Gossip Girl takes place within the same universe as the original show, but with a new host of characters. Kristen Bell is back as the voice of Gossip Girl, and Joshua Safran once again serves as creator and executive producer. The cast is made up of newcomers Jordan Alexander, Eli Brown, Thomas Doherty, Tavi Gevinson, Emily Alyn Lind, Evan Mock, Zion Moreno, Whitney Peak, and Savannah Lee Smith. This time around, Gossip Girl reigns on Instagram, but the scandals are still as shocking as ever.

Though Gossip Girl is a streaming series, it'll revisit its old stomping grounds for one night. Per Variety, the first episode of the Gossip Girl reboot will air on The CW the night after it arrives on HBO Max. The series premieres on streaming Thursday, July 8. Then, on Friday, July 9, the premiere will air on The CW at 8pm-9:30pm. It will then be available on the network's free digital platforms. As of this time, the premiere is the only episode of the Gossip Girl reboot that will air on The CW.

These days, it isn't that uncommon for streaming shows to have some kind of airing on broadcast television, particularly if the network involved owns the show's service. For example, CBS aired the first season of Star Trek: Discovery last fall in lieu of new programming. While Gossip Girl will only get one episode on regular television, that could change in the long run if the reboot proves to be a success. Airing episodes on The CW can help draw in viewers who perhaps don't have an HBO Max account.

It is fitting that the Gossip Girl reboot will share its first episode with The CW. After all, that network made the original a teen classic, and it would be a little strange to not have it acknowledge the reboot at all. There are many things about the new Gossip Girl that are different from the original - the diverse cast, the changed landscape of social media, etc. - but at least it can briefly hold some connection to what came before.
