Luna’s storyline in episode 8 was long awaited as she’s slowly become one of the Gossip Girl reboot’s best characters. Luna began the show with a minor part, but throughout seasons 1 and 2, she’s proven to be an amazing friend and interesting character. Through her conversations with Max, Julien, and Monet, it’s clear Luna is the understanding and underappreciated friend who quietly holds everything together. Luna and Monet’s roles in season 2 grew, yet Luna still took a back seat to Monet. Now that Monet’s villain era is at an end, and Zoya and Julien’s parts are smaller, it leaves room for Luna to take a more central role.

Georgina's Gossip Girl return was exactly what the HBO show needed, because it pushed Kate to use the children to take down their parents and raised the stakes. In episode 8, viewers get a glimpse into Luna's personal life. Luna lives with just her grandmother while her parents work and evidently ignore her. Gossip Girl's audience also saw how Luna's mother resented her daughter's youth and beauty and actively worked against her success. Sadly, because Luna was just happy to have her mother around, it was easy for her to be manipulated. However, with Monet at her side, Luna was able to see her mother's flaws and get revenge.

HBO's Gossip Girl Season 2 Is Giving Luna A Scandalous Storyline

Gossip Girl Reboot: Luna

Now that the Gossip Girl reboot has its Blair/Serena feud, the show’s becoming more intriguing, including Luna’s scandalous storyline. Luna’s abandonment issues because of her parents caused her to keep people at a distance. After Max called her out on those trust issues, she finally gave a guy a chance, but her mother’s arrival negatively impacted her new relationship. Luna knew how her mother was, but when she gave her hope by allowing Luna to style her, she couldn’t pass it up. So, when her mother hired a stylist anyway - causing Luna to lose her celebrity client - and then admitted to never wanting her, Luna revealed her mother’s secret.

It’s A Shame Luna Won’t Get To Live Up To Her Potential

Gossip Girl Reboot: Luna

HBO's Gossip Girl had some weak links to fix, but unfortunately, it's too late, due to the show's cancelation. Luna essentially ended her mother's acting career after revealing her mother was pretending to be Mexican - when she was actually Spanish - to advance her career. Yet, episode 9 didn't even acknowledge what happened. With this much emotional depth and family drama, Luna has the potential to carry Gossip Girl. Additionally, the show could've explored her friendship with Max further, since they're both fan favorites, and this would've given viewers a front-row seat as she tried to repair the emotional scars her parents left her with.

Luna wasn’t the only Gossip Girl character that won’t be able to live up to their potential. Audrey’s scheming was Blair Waldorf-worthy this season, along with her family and love life, were some of the show's most compelling storylines. Monet’s family drama and devilish attitude made her a complex and layered character and, overall, fun to watch. Even though Zoya and Julien were arguably Gossip Girl’s main characters, their roles were slowly being reduced to make room for these more fascinating women. The Gossip Girl reboot was beginning to show promise, but characters like Luna show it had potential - albeit potential that ultimately now can't be fully reached.
