With so many characters cropping up throughout the long existence of Gossip Girl, you’re bound to have forgotten precisely how the story of each one wrapped up. Whether through the final scene full of all of the main cast, or characters who came and went much earlier on, you may have forgotten about these conclusions but they're worth thinking about again.
It's interesting to take a look at whether each character got the ending they truly deserved, or if they deserved something better.
Fitting Endings: Blair
Blair might not have been the nicest character in the world throughout much of Gossip Girl, but deep down, you could tell she had a good heart.
Her life was a series of attempts to keep up appearances, but all she really wanted was Chuck. After enduring Dan’s torment for so long, it was good to see her finally able to live out her life with Chuck Bass.
Deserved More: Rufus
For a long time, Rufus was one of the main characters in the show. We saw a lot from him and he was a major part of the storylines, especially those involving Dan and Serena. All of sudden, he was barely relevant, his revitalized career as a Rockstar failed and he ended up missing out on a relationship with the woman he truly loved: Lily.
Fitting Endings: Chuck
Chuck is a bit of a difficult one to categorize, because on the one hand, one of the first things we ever saw him to was an attempted assault.
However, he ended up managing to prove his worth. His undying love for Blair was heart-warming and his commitment to his friends (even it was buried beneath arrogance) was clear. Seeing him finally end up with Blair without all of the confusion of their previous attempts was nice.
Deserved More: Jenny
Not counting the very last time we saw her (when she was quite a successful fashion designer), Jenny’s departure from the show as a regular cast member was incredibly unjust. After losing her virginity to her attempted rapist, Blair ‘banished’ her from the Upper East Side, leaving Jenny to go back to her mother’s house alone.
Fitting Endings: Nate
Nate was pretty much the only person in Gossip Girl who was actually a nice person both at heart and on the surface. It seemed to be a case of ‘one or the other’ for everyone else.
He was screwed over by his friends and his family and didn’t end the show with a successful relationship, however, he did end up landing an incredibly impressive job despite being in his early twenties.
Deserved More: Vanessa
Vanessa is another tough one to place. On the one hand, she was incredibly annoying and kept trying to involve herself in things that were nothing to do with her through her incredibly judgy self-importance. However, no one deserves to lose every single one of their friends in one night and have to wander off into a lonely new life.
Fitting Endings: Ivy
Ivy’s entire existence was basically a long-con. She was introduced as someone she wasn’t and lived a life based around being paid to impersonate someone else. Even after she was found out, she decided to stick around.
The fact that she was kicked out of the group eventually was incredibly satisfying and a fitting ending and it was a nice touch that she’d become a successful author rather than giving her a totally depressing end; she wasn’t evil after all.
Deserved More: Eric
Eric was a fan favorite from the early days of Gossip Girl. He was barely in the original novels, but the TV show made him a vital part of its storyline. However, around the same time that Jenny wandered off, we pretty much never heard from Eric again. We don’t really know if he ended up successful or not, but we wished we’d got to know more about Eric other than seeing him very briefly right at the end.
Fitting Endings: Bart Bass
We thought that the evil old rich guy (and Chuck’s father) was done for all the way back in season two when he suddenly died off-screen. Much later, it was revealed that he was actually alive, and continuing to use his son and family while doing pretty much everything possible to gain more power and more money.
Falling off a building was the least he deserved, but he does have the impressive accolade of being killed twice.
Deserved More: Raina Thorpe
It wasn’t Raina Thorpe’s fault that her father was a corrupt, evil maniac. After she figured it out, she helped Blair and Chuck, but her endpoint was rather sad. She went back home by herself, now resenting her own father, and was never heard from again.
