Anya Taylor-Joy has been cast in Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson’s upcoming film The Gorge. In addition to his work on the 2016 Marvel film, Derrickson is known for his horror projects such as The Black Phone and Sinister. The Gorge’s plot and logline is still unknown, but it will be produced by Skydance and has been described as a “genre-bending love story.”

The Gorge will also star Miles Teller, who signed onto the film in August. The Top Gun: Maverick actor is also attached to the project as an executive producer. The Gorge was originally sold as a spec script to Skydance last year by writer Zach Dean, following a long bidding war. Derrickson joined the project as director in March 2022, shortly before The Black Phone earned critical and box office success by grossing over $160 million globally with a $25 million budget.

Per Deadline, Anya Taylor-Joy has joined The Gorge as Teller’s co-star. Though the film has been in the works for quite some time, the project was fast-tracked following Derrickson and Teller signing on amid their recent career successes with The Black Phone and Top Gun: Maverick, respectively. In addition to the announcement of Taylor-Joy’s casting, The Gorge was officially picked up to be distributed by Apple Original Films.

Taylor-Joy is one of the busiest actors in Hollywood right now. In addition to signing onto The Gorge, the Queen’s Gambit star is not short on other projects. Among the most anticipated is Furiosa, a spinoff of the Mad Max franchise set to be released in 2024. Another is the adaptation of Lolita author Vladamir Nabokov’s novel Laughter in the Dark, which will reunite Taylor-Joy with The Queen’s Gambit co-creator Scott Frank, who is set to direct. Even closer than those projects are the Adam McKay-produced The Menu, set to release on November 18, and her role as Princess Peach in The Super Mario Bros. Movie, which is due on April 7, 2023. Audiences can also catch Taylor-Joy in David O. Russell’s Amsterdam, which is in theaters now.

Taylor-Joy’s casting in The Gorge is seemingly perfect, as she is known for her horror roles but is skilled at blending into any kind of character. The Gorge’s description of being “genre-bending” definitely describes Taylor-Joy as well. Plus, her talent mixed with Teller’s, whose best roles include the intense Whiplash and the coming-of-age film The Spectacular Now, will definitely be an interesting combination. With it being so early in production, it will likely be sometime before more information on The Gorge is released, but in the meantime, audiences can look forward to Taylor-Joy’s other upcoming projects.
