Josh Brolin has confirmed that all of The Goonies, who never say die, survived Thanos’ snap in Avengers: Infinity War. The 1985 beloved classic, The Goonies, follows a group of teenagers who hunt for pirate treasure so that they can take on the property developing company that plans to destroy their home and build a country club. The film's influence can be seen in projects like Netflix’s Stranger Things, the upcoming Ghostbusters: Afterlife, and the career of Josh Brolin, whose first role was as Mikey’s (Sean Astin) older brother, Brand Walsh.
Since The Goonies, Brolin has appeared in 60 movies, a handful of which are comic book films, including Jonah Hex, Sin City: A Dame to Kill For, and Deadpool 2. That said, he has appeared several times in the Marvel Cinematic Universe throughout its first three phases as its big bad, Thanos. In Avengers: Infinity War, the good guys failed to stop the Mad Titan from collecting all the Infinity Stones and eliminating half of the universe’s population with the snap of his fingers. Following its undoing in Avengers: Endgame, the snap left many fans wondering who exactly survived it. While many of the Avengers’ deaths were captured onscreen, others were left to conjecture. Apparently, this includes characters that may or may not exist within the MCU.
In an interview with ACE Universe (via Comicbook), Josh Brolin talked about playing Thanos, Deadpool 2’s Cable, and starring in the highly-anticipated Dune. During the conversation, the interview jokingly asked if he thought the Goonies and Cable would have survived Thanos’ snap. Read what Brolin had to say below:
"How do you even answer that? All the Goonies are still around. [In regard to Cable] I like that question because that gets really involved in like who Cable is, and what the different machinations of Cable are, with time issues and paradox. I love all that stuff, it's unanswerable.”
In Deadpool 2, Cable, who’s actually the son of Jean Grey and Scott Summers, is a mutant whose family is killed by the mutant known as Firefist. Therefore Cable travels to the past to stop his tragic future from happening. Cable becomes part of Wade Wilson’s X-Force by the end of that film, which was supposed to spawn its own movie before the Disney/Fox merger. In fact, the Deadpool franchise was supposed to consists of four movies, and while Brolin doesn’t know what’s in store, Disney has confirmed they’ll be moving forward with Deadpool 3 starring Ryan Reynolds’ Merc with a Mouth.
While Cable (and other mutants) may eventually be revealed as existing within the MCU, The Goonies will not. However, that doesn’t make imagining Chunk calling the Sheriff, claiming his neighbor just turned to dust, and the Sheriff not believing him due to his proclivity for outlandish stories any less amusing. As for Thanos, Brolin recently voiced the character in an episode of Marvel Studios’ animated series What If…?. Its second episode achieved the impossible and saw the Mad Titan abandon his goal of mass genocide long before the events of Infinity War. In that reality, maybe Michael Jackson did go to Chunk’s house to use the bathroom.
