The Goonies cast reunite 35 years later and recite iconic lines in new video for charity. Ever since its arrival in 1985, Richard Donner’s iconic adventure film has literally been a favorite of millions, with enough staying power to keep it relevant even today. Produced by blockbuster making, Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg, The Goonies arrived at a time that was perhaps perfectly suited for the adventure genre. Not only had the world been introduced to two different Indiana Jones films by 1985, but even the sci-fi adventure of the Star Wars franchise had helped create a place for stories about ragtag groups of misfits fighting for a better future.

The Goonies was responsible for an untold amount of creative inspiration for an entire generation, and with its wide appeal as well as enduring principles, the film is now being passed on to the children of those who enjoyed it the first time around. Fans everywhere have been hoping that, given the popularity of sequels and franchises over the years, a Goonies 2 would emerge at some point, but to date that doesn’t appear to be the case.

Nonetheless, although a sequel doesn’t seem to be in the cards at the moment, there’s still plenty of fun to be had with The Goonies. While the coronavirus pandemic continues to wreak global havoc, Frozen star Josh Gad has launched a YouTube channel from which he hosts his new webseries, Reunited Apart. The new show will serve as a fundraising platform for The Center For Disaster Philanthropy, which seeks to aid some of those who have been hardest hit financially by the pandemic. In exchange for donations, Gad will reunite casts of various hit films via video chat. Things were kicked off in a big way recently, as the channel’s first reunion was none other than the cast of The Goonies. The video below even shows Steven Spielberg getting in on the fun. Check it out:

Aside from appearing together (though physically apart), the cast reminisce about what it was like before and after The Goonies and even quote well-known lines from the film. Gad makes for a great host, particularly because of his obvious love for the film as well as its cast. But perhaps one of the biggest surprises of the nearly 30 minute video is an appearance by The Goonies director, Richard Donner. The filmmaking veteran happened to be celebrating his 90th birthday at the time, and in addition to looking quite good for his advanced age, Donner was in great spirits – even tolerating a laugh at his expense when Spielberg recalled a prank he’d personally arranged.

Lastly, there was some talk of the possibility of a sequel. However, Spielberg’s assessment that a sequel won’t go ahead as long as they can’t come up with a better idea than the original indicates that The Goonies 2 won’t be arriving any time soon. Of course, that doesn’t mean that it will never happen, but after 35 years of trying, it seems that no one can find a solid plot to merit a sequel. For now, then, the above reunion is still a perfect way to remember The Goonies and to celebrate the existence of a truly magical film.
