Here's why The Goonies 2 never happened despite the on-going rumors of a planned sequel. The Goonies premiered in 1985 and has since become one of the most beloved cult classics in recent memory. The comedy was directed by Richard Donner and executive produced by the legendary Steven Spielberg.

The Goonies was a brilliant adventure film that pulled in viewers of all ages. It centered a rag-tag group of kids who found a treasure map, setting them off on a wild expedition in the hope of finding the fortune of the pirate, One-Eyed Willy. The group from the "Goon Docks" of Astoria, Oregon, were also suffering from the looming foreclosure of their homes. Along the way, the group encountered the Fratelli crime family, but they also met an ally in Sloth. In the end, the kids found the treasure, ensuring that they won't lose their homes, but it was the important relationships they formed along the way that made the adventure worth the risk.

The notion of a sequel to the 1985 film began in the early 2000s. Donner has been outspoken about his interest in The Goonies 2 and has claimed that he wrote a story Spielberg was on board with. At the time, however, Warner Bros. had no interest in developing a sequel. Donner held on to the hope of a sequel but had doubts whether some of the original cast would return. Sean Astin, who played Mikey in the original movie, shared his interest in reprising his role as of 2007. Donner grew more positive about the sequel in the years that followed, but the idea couldn't seem to find any sort of traction, and a budget might be the main issue surrounding The Goonies 2.

The Goonies look at the Map

In July 2019, Corey Feldman revealed (via US Magazine) that he and Astin developed a pitch for a Goonies sequel. Feldman and Astin developed a 10-page idea, which they presented to Donner and a representative of Spielberg. Donner supposedly loved the idea they came up with but was worried that it would be too expensive. Feldman added that the cast and crew can't seem to agree on one specific idea, which had also been what was holding the sequel back for decades.

The rejection was certainly not the news that Feldman and Astin wanted to hear, but they still shared that they feel like another Goonies installment will happen down the line - though it'll most likely be a reboot, not a sequel. However, the fact that the wheels are still moving and people involved with the original film are still talking about ideas is a good sign for those wishing for a sequel. Hollywood is also still stuck in the trend of reboots and remakes, so the time might finally be right.

If The Goonies 2 does finally fall into place, Donner will undoubtedly want to be at the helm. The director is already 89-years-old but he claims to be capable of developing a sequel. The possibility of another installment now sits in the hands of the fans. If they are vocal enough, the cast and crew of The Goonies believe that the studio would finally fast-track a sequel.
