The Goonies star Corey Feldman offers a disappointing update while addressing the chances of The Goonies 2 ever becoming a reality. Released in 1985, The Goonies followed a group of young misfits who, upon the discovery of an old map, embark on an adventure to find the long-lost treasure of One-Eyed Willy. Based on a story by Steven Spielberg and a screenplay written by Chris Columbus, The Goonies has established itself as an '80s classic over the years.

At the center of The Goonies was its young cast, which included Sean Astin, Josh Brolin, Jeff Cohen, Ke Huy Quan, Kerri Green, and Martha Plimpton, as well as Feldman. Having received an incredibly warm welcome at the box office during its release, the film has since appealed to new generations of audiences, leading to numerous discussions surrounding a sequel. The possibility of The Goonies 2 has always been somewhat up in the air, with some of the original cast having reportedly been unenthusiastic about returning, and as such, no concrete plans have ever been set in motion.

Now, Feldman offers a disappointing update. During a recent appearance at Fanboy Expo Knoxville 2022 (shared by Fandom Spotlite), Feldman answers a series of audience questions, with many, naturally, curious whether he knew of any current plans for The Goonies 2. In direct response to a question that asked whether there was any talk of a remake, Feldman immediately says, "Let's hope not" before revealing that he'd be more open to a sequel, akin to this year's Top Gun: Maverick. However, the actor cites the unfortunate passing of The Goonies director Richard Donner as one of the reasons why it would be harder to make it happen. Check out Feldman's full quote below.

Let's hope not. You know, those remakes, they ruin everything. You mean a sequel? You gotta be very careful with that wording right, because it’s very fine print. You don't want a remake, because that's what they did with Ghostbusters with the girls. No, no, no. You want like a Top Gun sequel, right? They did it right with Top Gun. Unfortunately, the head Goonie, Richard Donner, passed away last year, sadly which makes it a lot harder to make that happen.

The Goonies

Feldman's comments about the Top Gun sequel come after the Tom Cruise-fronted film reached a staggering $1.37 billion at the global box office this weekend, currently making it the thirteenth-highest-grossing film of all time. The film has seen unprecedented levels of success, with many studios now hoping to replicate this as the era of these so-called 'legacy reboots' continues on. Despite no plans on the horizon for a Goonies sequel with the original cast, a Goonies-inspired series titled Our Time is set to make its way to Disney+ in the near future.

Feldman's comments surrounding The Goonies 2 aren't necessarily surprising, though they are no less disappointing for those who were hoping to see the original cast reprise their roles someday. While Feldman certainly hasn't quashed all hope of a sequel ever coming to fruition, it's understandable that the cast would be somewhat less interested in returning without Donner. As with any sequel, finding the right formula is the trickiest part, and it's likely that Feldman's hesitations towards The Goonies 2 are echoed by fans who would only want to see a follow-up should it do The Goonies justice.
