Goonies 2 concept art reveals the sequel pitch’s new treasure hunt. Released in 1985, the original Goonies starred a crew of then-unknown kid actors as a group of misfit friends who discover an old pirate treasure map and set out on a quest to find the loot and use it to save their neighborhood from evil land developers.

Produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Richard Donner, The Goonies captured the imaginations of a whole generation of ‘80s kids, going on to become a hit with $124 million at the box office on a reported budget of $19 million. Over the years, the reputation of The Goonies as a classic of the ‘80s has only grown, leading to more and more talk of a sequel finally finding its way to screens. Recently, the 35th anniversary of The Goonies led to a spate of tributes, and even more speculation about a sequel.

Now, Goldbergs creator Adam F. Goldberg has revealed his own plans for a Goonies sequel, saying he’s gotten as far as crafting a script and setting up a meeting with Donner (which unfortunately was put off after the coronavirus lockdown hit). As part of his pitch, Goldberg called on artist Michael Barnard to create concept art for the would-be movie (via Slashfilm). See the art in the space below along with Goldberg’s tweet about his quest to get Goonies 2 made:

Goonies 2 Concept Art Reveals Sequel Pitch’s New Treasure Hunt

As Goldberg recently revealed, he first pitched Donner on a Goonies 2 idea way back in 2005, but Donner ultimately passed on Goldberg’s ideas, saying none of them lived up to the moment in the first Goonies when the gang discovered One-Eyed Willy’s pirate ship. Goldberg says he began pecking away at the sequel again in 2013 after writing a Goonies-centered Goldbergs episode, and since then has gotten all the way to writing a whole script.

As the concept art above shows, the new Goonies adventure would again feature a treasure map and a hunt for the hidden riches. The text on the giant skull in the picture reads in English: “One mistake shall rain down fear / Feel the wrath of the Devil’s Tears.” If Goldberg gets his way, fans will one day get to find out the answer to that particular riddle, and will also get to see what wonders lurk behind the doors set into the stone skull in the concept art.

But before Goldberg can make his Goonies 2 dream come true, he has to solve the riddle of pitching Donner on a sequel idea he thinks is worthy of the original Goonies. In all honestly, the first movie is not such a classic that it should be hard to craft a story that matches or surpasses it, but clearly Donner is protective of the movie’s legacy and won’t just give in to the first filmmaker who comes along with a sequel idea. By the sounds of it though, Goldberg is legitimately passionate about making Goonies 2 happen, so here’s hoping Donner accepts his pitch and allows the sequel to finally go forward.
