Google has finally confirmed that it's working on the long-awaited Pixel Watch, but when it comes to the smartwatch's release date, things are still pretty murky. If it feels like we've been talking about the Pixel Watch for years now, that's because we have. Rumors of a Pixel Watch have been circulating since the days of the Pixel 2 and Pixel 3. Every year seemed like it would be the year Google announced the Pixel Watch. But time and time again, another year came and went without the slightest mention of a Pixel Watch.
But that changes this year. On May 11, 2022, Google finally announced the Pixel Watch. It did so during its Google I/O keynote and offered a small preview of what's to come. We know that the Pixel Watch has a round design, will run Wear OS 3, and come with Fitbit integration out of the box. It all looks like a mighty tempting package — even with the four-year-old chipset powering the whole thing.
While there's a lot about the Pixel Watch that Google hasn't addressed, the biggest elephant in the room is its release date. When it unveiled the Pixel Watch in May, Google simply said that the watch was 'coming this fall' alongside the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Having a release window to look forward to is nice, but 'fall' could mean a lot of things. The Pixel Watch could launch as early as September or as late as December.
The Pixel Watch Is Probably Launching In October
Although Google hasn't said anything beyond the fall launch date, we can make an educated guess about when the Pixel Watch will come out. For the past few years, Google has launched its new Pixel devices in October. The Pixel 6 series was released on October 28, the Pixel 4 hit store shelves on October 24, and the Pixel 3 went on sale on October 18. The only exception to that rule has been the Pixel 5, which launched on September 30.
With that in mind — and the fact that the Pixel Watch is releasing 'alongside' the Pixel 7 family — it's safe to assume that the Pixel Watch will be released at some point in October 2022. It's entirely possible we won't see the Pixel Watch until November, given the ongoing chip shortage, but based on everything we know right now, October seems like the most likely release date. Would we like to have the Pixel Watch sooner than that? Sure! But after years of waiting, having to endure another few months isn't so bad.
