The Pixel Watch has arrived after a long wait, and it is not a bad attempt for Google's first smartwatch. Despite providing the software that powered several smartwatches for years, Google has taken a while to launch its first wearable. Although, its absence has allowed Apple and Samsung to grab a healthy market share.

Google's smartwatch will face stiff competition in a market ruled by Apple Watches, Samsung Galaxy Watches and Garmin's plethora of watches designed for various activities. However, like its smartphones, it should find many users. The Pixel Watch is expected to be the first of many to come and not a one-off project. It has invested a lot already with the acquisition of Fitbit for over $2 billion and the purchase of smartwatch technology from Fossil for $40 million.

The Pixel Watch has a round dial, but despite that design choice, it can't be mistaken for any other watch with the same shape. The display is covered by a 3D domed glass that fuses with the recycled stainless steel frame, giving it a premium and slim appearance. In addition, Google says the watch has a 5 ATM water resistance rating and is scratch-resistant. The Pixel Watch is available in Gold, Black and Silver and has four fluoroelastomer band options by default. However, buyers can choose from more than 20 different bands in various colors and materials, with pricing starting from $49.99 and going up to $199.99.

The Pixel Watch Is Perfect For Those With Small Wrists

Unlike rivals Samsung and Apple, who offer their smartwatches in multiple sizes, Google has announced the Pixel Watch in only one size — 41mm. It has a 1.2-inch AMOLED touchscreen with 320 PPI, support for an Always-on display, and a maximum brightness level of up to 1000 nits. It also has Gorilla Glass 3 protection. The small size of the Pixel Watch makes it a perfect choice for those with small wrists and limited options for smartwatches. There is an Exynos 9110 SoC chipset powering Google's new watch, and it comes along with a Cortex-M33 coprocessor. The device also has 2GB of RAM and 32GB of storage for playlists and audiobooks.

Like the Galaxy Watch 5, the Pixel Watch runs WearOS 3.5 without One UI Watch. Instead, it has Google Assistant built-in and a Google Home app so that users can control their smart home devices right from their wrists. And with access to the Google Play Store, there is no shortage of apps. While Google powers the smart part of the watch, Fitbit handles the health and fitness tracking aspect. In addition to having an optical heart rate sensor for all-day heart rate monitoring, there is also a blood oxygen sensor and an ECG sensor for detecting signs of AFib (Atrial Fibrillation). The Pixel Watch also has sleep tracking with Sleep Score and Sleep Stages. These details can be viewed on the Health Metrics Dashboard in the Fitbit app, while Fitbit Premium provides deeper insights and hundreds of workouts and mindfulness sessions. However, by default, users get 40 exercise modes.

There is also an Emergency SOS feature for a user in an emergency or unsafe condition. The Pixel Watch connects via Bluetooth 5.0 and has support for Google Fast Pair. It also has 2.4GHz Wi-Fi, NFC, a four-satellite GNSS chip, and a built-in speaker and microphone. Other sensors are an electronic compass, altimeter, accelerometer, gyroscope and ambient light sensor. There is a 294mAh battery inside the watch, which Google claims will provide up to 24 hours of battery life. It also supports fast charging — a 30-minute charge will provide up to 50 percent battery life. The Pixel Watch is available for pre-order starting today for $349 for the Bluetooth/Wi-Fi version and $399 for the LTE version. In addition, it comes with six months of Fitbit premium and three months of YouTube Music Premium. It will be available on Oct. 13.
