Minutes after announcing the Pixel 6a during its I/O 2022 keynote, Google gave an early preview of the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. For the most part, Google I/O is a software-focused conference. It's where Google talks about its latest innovations for Google Search, Maps, Photos, Android, etc.
However, as Google has repeatedly shown, Google I/O is also a hardware event. Google's used past I/O keynotes to announce gadgets like the Nexus 7, Nexus Q, Google Home, the Pixel 3a, etc. And I/O 2022 is no different. Google used this year's opening keynote to announce the Pixel 6a and offer an early tease of the upcoming Pixel Watch.
But those weren't the only hardware announcements from Google I/O 2022. Also present at this year's I/O were the Google Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Well, kind of. Google didn't fully unveil the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro, but it did offer an early preview of what the phones look like. Like the rumors have already suggested, the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro look very similar to the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro they'll replace — featuring a two-tone back and the iconic camera bar. Along with a new camera sensor placement, the camera bar is also now made of aluminum instead of glass. The overall aesthetic is mostly the same, but it should result in a noticeably more premium-feeling device in daily use.
The Pixel 7 & 7 Pro Will Have A New Google Tensor Chip
And the new design isn't the only thing that Google teased. Google also confirmed that the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro will have a second-gen Google Tensor chipset. We didn't get any comment about what kind of improvements the new Tensor chip will offer, but we'll likely get the usual upgrades of faster performance, better battery efficiency, etc. And, of course, both the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro will come with Android 13 out of the box.
And... that's all we know right now! This was very much a tease of the Pixel 7 series — not a proper announcement. The full unveiling is coming later this year, likely in October during Google's usual fall hardware event. From the Pixel 7 and 7 Pro's pricing, full spec details, and availability, all of those details are coming later.
