A new subscription program announced by Google allows subscribers to upgrade their Pixel phone every two years. It is a paid subscription program, of course, so this phone won't necessarily be free. However, it does represent a more cut-and-dry method of being able to get the latest Google smartphone every other year.

Part of the Google Fi program that already offers Flexible and Unlimited plans, when combining the two subscriptions, users can get both their phone services from Google and a clear upgrade path to another Pixel phone. Google promises its Google Fi plan to be a flexible program that allows for users to add another person to the plan or change data needs with minimal hassle, and this new phone subscription seems to fit that mold.

With this new option from Google Fi, users get a Pixel 4a smartphone, device protection, and a phone upgrade every two years for $15 per month. Google notes that the subscription adds up to $133 in savings over the two years, and provides users with a Pixel 4a that's theirs to keep after the end of that two-year period. Plus, during those two years, subscribers get to utilize a smartphone featuring a 24-hour battery and the popular Google Assistant.

The Fi Flexible plan costs just $20 per month to start, though it will charge users $10 for each gigabyte of data that they use in a given month. The plan offers unlimited calls and texts and does not include a contract, so customers are free to cancel whenever they want. With the Fi Unlimited plan, subscribers are charged $70 per month. However, they'll have access to unlimited data and full-speed hotspot tethering. Internet speeds will be slowed when 22 gigabytes of data have been used in the current month, but customers won't be charged anything extra. The plan also includes a Google One membership, which provides 100 gigabytes of cloud storage for each member on the plan.

Now that Google has both a service plan and a phone subscription, it sure seems like the tech giant is taking the next step in becoming a key player in the carrier industry. The plans offer good value, and when paired with the opportunity to get a new Pixel phone every two years, Google Fi customers won't have to worry about either part of the smartphone chain and can get on with actually using the device.
