A first look at The Good Place season 2 has arrived — the first hint at what the show will look like following its shocking season 1 finale. The series, which debuted last September, comes from TV veteran Michael Schur, whose successful credits include The Office, Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine, and Black Mirror, among others. Kristen Bell stars as Eleanor Shellstrop, a recently deceased woman who wakes up in a heaven-like afterlife designed by Michael (Ted Danson) only to discover he's mistakenly identified her as someone far more virtuous and giving. She spends the rest of the season scrambling to cover up her morally imperfect past and stop the "Good Place" from descending into chaos in the process.

It was widely well received, particularly for a freshman comedy, and despite modest live ratings, it showed impressive delayed viewer gains throughout its first season. In fact, the finale was hailed as one of the best TV twists of the fall season, and it was renewed by NBC just over a week after that episode aired.

Now, EW has unveiled a first look at the upcoming season, including several photos an an interview with Schur, who addressed the big reveal that Eleanor and her fellow humans had actually been in hell the whole time, with Michael masterminding the whole scenario. Eleanor manages to figure it out, and just before Michael wipes her memory to start anew, she writes herself a note telling her to find faux soulmate Chidi. As Schur told the outlet:

[vn_gallery name="The Good Place Season 2 First Look Photos" id="1000337"]

“[Michael] has an individual torture vector for each of the four involving different soul mates and new scenarios. The idea is to keep them apart for as long as possible, but Eleanor’s note to herself, which says ‘Find Chidi,’ ends up making that impossible.”

As for the photos, they don't give away much, except that Eleanor ends up finding Chidi sooner rather than later. In one image, they meet up near a fountain of clam chowder — a callback to a gag from season 1 in which bad guy Trevor (Adam Scott) announced over a train PA that the dining car served only room-temperature Manhattan clam chowder.

Eleanor and Chidi are also seen talking to Michael, who will have to throw them off the scent as they try to retrace what happened to them. “[Eleanor] has found Chidi because of the note and has some questions,” Schur continued. “He is trying to do his Michael thing and try to spin his way out of those questions.

And lastly, celestial personal helper Janet (D’Arcy Carden) is seen sporting a new outfit, which Schur confirmed means she's gone through yet another reboot (hint: it won't be her last). That's not a lot to go off of, but if season 2 is anything like season 1, The Good Place will only get stronger.
