NBC renews half-hour comedy The Good Place for a season 3. The network ordered the show created by Mike Schur (Parks and Recreation, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) straight to series in August of 2015, with season 1 debuting in Fall 2016. While much of The Good Place season 1 received decent reviews, the show became a critical hit when it introduced a massive twist in the season 1 finale. The reveal completely upended the status quo of the series and many wondered how the show could continue - and, at the time, it was unclear if the show would continue at all. But, NBC renewed The Good Place for season 2, which debuted earlier this fall to positive reviews, and has worked to build on the season 1 twist.
The Good Place season 2 is currently on an extended hiatus before a planned return in early January, with fans somewhat disgruntled by the show being broken up when its seasons are only 13 episodes. Still, despite the extended holiday break for the NBC series, the network obviously has a great deal of confidence in it since The Good Place is confirmed to return for a third outing.
THR is reporting that NBC renewed The Good Place for season 3, with another 13-episode outing slated for the network's 2018-2019 season. While it's unclear when exactly the show will premiere in that timeframe, it seems likely season 3 will debut in September like its previous two seasons. As reported by THR, The Good Place season 2 has averaged a 2.0 rating with adults 18-49 and 6.2 million total viewers, which is a bump from season 1.
The Good Place follows Eleanor Shellstrop (Kristen Bell), who awakes in the Good Place after her death and is shown around by her neighborhood's architect, the angel Michael (Ted Danson). However, it quickly becomes apparent that Eleanor is in the wrong place, and she enlists some others from her neighborhood to help: Chidi Anagonye (William Jackson Harper), Tahani Al-Jamil (Jameela Jamil), and Jason Mendoza (Manny Jacinto). They also employ the help of Janet (D'Arcy Carden), a programmed guide of the neighborhood. Their adventures throughout the first two seasons have led viewers to explore more of the world of the Good Place and, of course, the Bad Place - and, surprisingly a middle place of sorts.
Given the ratings bump between season 1 and season 2, it's not entirely surprising that NBC renewed The Good Place since it seems to be growing a devoted fan base. Undoubtedly, the twist in the season 1 finale piqued the interest of many who didn't originally watch the series' debut outing. Additionally, with the show continuing to garner a great deal of critical praise more than halfway through season 2, NBC is likely hoping that attention will further translate to more viewers.
Still, no matter the reason NBC renewed The Good Place, fans of the series are no doubt excited to see the show continue. And, though the The Good Place season 2 finale hasn't aired yet, it remains to be seen how Schur keeps the series interesting - and whether the sophomore season finale has a similarly status quo-upending twist in store for fans.
The Good Place season 2 continues Thursday, January 4th at 8:30 ET on NBC. Season 3 will premiere during the 2018-2019 season.
