Neil Gaiman teases Good Omens season 2, saying that it is a big upgrade from the first season. Good Omens is a Prime original series co-created by Gaiman and Douglas Mackinnon. It is based on the novel of the same name, which was written by Gaiman and Terry Pratchett. Good Omens stars David Tennant, Michael Sheen, Frances McDormand, Sam Taylor Buck, Daniel Mays, and Jon Hamm.

Good Omens aired its first season in 2019 where it introduced a new fantasy world in a mere 6 episodes. Its first season focused on the bungling of Armageddon, featuring an eclectic cast of characters including an angel, a demon, a doom-slaying witch, and an 11-year-old Antichrist. As Good Omens built its world and characters in its first season, the show maintained an interestingly light tone, imbuing comedy within every episode. This was well-played by Tennant, whose performance was revered, especially by those who were fans of Doctor Who and had seen Tennant embody similar characteristics as the Tenth Doctor.

Now, Gaiman teases the scale of Good Omens season 2. In a recent interview with Rolling Stone India, Gaiman discussed the development of season 2 of Good Omens, comparing it to the first season. Not only did he praise the work done on the second season, calling it “wonderful” and “so much fun,” but he even teased that the new season would show vast improvement from the first iteration. Gaiman claims that he “was learning” in season 1 of Good Omens, questioning how the world and the series operates. In season 2, however, he has a much better understanding of the series. Check out his full quote below:

I’m so proud of Good Omens, season two. I think it’s wonderful. [...] Oh, it’s wonderful. It’s so much fun. Partly because I learned so much. The first time you do something, you just learn how to do it and then you can start to play. So when I wrote and made Good Omens I was learning, how do you do a Good Omens? I think there’s this thing in my head, but how does it work? I feel like Good Omens season one was “Chopsticks.” This is much more me getting to the whole orchestra.

If season 1 was merely “chopsticks,” it will certainly be a wonder to see what the whole “orchestra” has in store. Though just 6 episodes, the first season of Good Omens introduced the audience to a compelling combination of characters with great comic potential between them. If the second season is to ramp up so significantly as Gaiman suggests, Good Omens season 2 could be a stellar next installment in the fantasy world.

With Good Omens season 2 being released later this year, 2022 is proving to be a good year for Gaiman. The writer also pleased fans with his work on another adaptation of his work with Netflix’s The Sandman. Between the two shows, Gaiman is proving himself to be a force not only as an author but as a TV creator and writer as well. Reducing incredible work to “chopsticks” may be a stretch, but the writer’s past work indicates that Gaiman is certainly capable of whatever “orchestra” he has next in store for Good Omens.
