Machine Gun Kelly is making moves, and he's specifically made a movie called Good Mourning under his given name of Colson Baker, written and directed alongside fellow artist Mod Sun. The new comedy, which is out today is select theaters and available on demand, walks the path of classic stoner films such as 1993's Dazed and Confused, 1995's Friday, and 2008's Pineapple Express.

Good Mourning features quite the ensemble, including but not limited to Baker's fiancée Megan Fox, Dove Cameron, Pete Davidson, Becky G, and Jenna Boyd. The story revolves around TV star London Clash (played by Baker), who must choose between love and fame as an increasingly chaotic series of events unfolds around him.

Screen Rant spoke to Baker and Derek Ryan Smith (AKA Mod Sun) about the stoner comedy inspirations that led to Good Mourning and what their own biggest purchases had been early on in their careers.

Good Mourning Still

Screen Rant: I have to say you guys have really been unleashing the inner scene kid in me in the past few years, and I feel like this movie is also this little nostalgia itch. What were some of the inspirations that you had when you were writing the movie?

Colson Baker: I actually brought one of my inspirations. It's this string [holds up string].

Mod Sun: What is that?! Why are you carrying that around with you?

Colson Baker: Yes. I looked at this every morning I woke up, before we went to set, and I said, "Be like this. Be like this string." [Laughs]. No, that's actually my straw from my Bloody Mary that I've torn apart.

But the inspiration was that I feel like what me and Mod, the past couple years, have been doing is, "Oh, there's a void here in culture. Let's fill it. Oh, there's a void here. Let's fill it."  Stoner comedies in general have been lacking. Stoner comedies written by actual stoners have been lacking. I can't stand more than anything watching comedies, especially stoner comedies, written by old, not-funny Hollywood people. That's where you're gonna finish.

Mod Sun: I'm gonna pick it up from there. Really, I think one of the things we held close is the feeling you got the first time you watched American Pie. Trying to create that feeling again.

London Clash bought The Flower Shower. That was his first big paycheck purchase. What's the coolest thing or most obscure thing that you guys bought with one of your checks?

Mod Sun: A Cadillac from Travis Barker. That was the first thing I did when I got a check.

Colson Baker: I remember that. That was really cool. I bought a $35,000 chair...

Mod Sun: And books, too.

Colson Baker: Oh, dude. Actually, speaking of $35,000, I bought a $35,000 Picasso. It's just a book that's signed by him in pencil. He designed the art for [it].

George Macy from Macy's used to have an underground book club, and he would send out 1500 copies of books that would re-tell famous fairy tales [in] and all this stuff. Picasso did one of them and I have it, and it's signed in pencil. I'm like, "That's so weird."

But yeah, I went into the bookstore and I was like, "I'll take that." And the guy was like, "?" And I was like, "No, no, no, no. I'll take that." And he was like, "Are you serious?"

Mod Sun: That's really cool, actually.

Colson Baker: It was kind of hard.

Mod Sun: I like him more now because he buys books.

Mod, we have a definitive answer finally of who “Sk8r Boi” is about. Is that your favorite Avril Lavigne song or is there a different one that you love?

Mod Sun: That, and the song "What the Hell." The melodies and the hook are so incredible!

Incredible. Unfortunately, I'm out of time, but I love talking to you.

Colson Baker: Both of you said incredible at the same time. That's incredible.
