ABC sitcom The Goldbergs is heading into season 10, after a season 9 that saw big changes take place. Created by Adam F. Goldberg, The Goldbergs is a comedic take on events from Goldberg's own childhood, and actually beat Stranger Things to the 1980s nostalgia push that's never really gone away since the mid-2010s. Of course, The Goldbergs follows in the proud tradition of prior nostalgia-driven sitcoms like That 70's Show and Happy Days, as well as dramedies like The Wonder Years. As these series prove, retrospectives of the recent past often prove great fodder for weekly laughs.

Unfortunately for The Goldbergs, the family-oriented comedy that's brought so much enjoyment to so many since 2013 saw its own set become a source of drama during season 9. In late 2021, Goldbergs viewers were shocked and stunned by the sudden news that Jeff Garlin, who had played Adam's dad Murray since the beginning of the series, was no longer part of the cast. Garlin was accused of on-set misconduct, leading to his abrupt exit.

Garlin's already shot material was still used during season 9, but thanks to the surprise mid-season nature of the departure, producers opted to keep Murray around after via previously unaired footage of Garlin, as well stand-ins and CGI edits. It made for a strange time for The Goldbergs, as the change definitely wasn't always a seamless one. Still, ABC opted to order The Goldbergs season 10 regardless, and here's everything that's known about it.

The Goldbergs Season 10 Renewal

The Goldbergs Beverly

ABC officially announced a season 10 renewal for The Goldbergs in April 2022, although their previous decision to sign star Wendi McLendon-Covey to a new contract kind of tipped the network's hand in that regard. Getting to season 10 cements The Goldbergs as the longest-running live-action sitcom currently on the air. Fellow ABC comedy Modern Family held that spot until its end in 2020.

In addition to Wendi McLendon-Covey returning as Beverly, fellow The Goldbergs cast members Sean Giambrone (Adam), Troy Gentile (Barry), and Hayley Orrantia (Erica) have all also officially signed on to come back. Sam Lerner is also returning as Barry's close friend and Erica's new husband Geoff. As mentioned previously, Jeff Garlin is officially out due to his various misconduct issues, and Murray will finally be written out of The Goldbergs early in season 10. With Garlin gone and Pops actor George Segal passing away in 2021, at least audiences can rest easy knowing the rest of the core Goldbergs cast is locked in for season 10.

One thing that's still entirely unclear is how The Goldbergs season 10 will write Murray out, although a sudden offscreen death seems like the most logical option. The dramatic thrust of season 9's finale was Adam graduating from high school, and Beverly's corresponding struggles with accepting that all her kids will be leaving the nest. There was also the big reveal that Erica, following her decision not to go on tour with Cyndi Lauper, is pregnant with Geoff's child. This sets up the scenario of seeing how Beverly functions as a grandmother, which could be especially interesting with Murray and Pops both out of the picture.
